{Chapter 2}
It was a lovely morning of the spring and the okiya was humming with life.
Johnny Kitagawa had come down from his room to spend time with his tenants whom he almost treated like his own child, almost because no parent would ever raise their child to become a geisha.
"Father," he heard someone call out to him. He was addressed as such because all of his 'children' looked up to him as if he was their real father. Johnny looked to his left, drawing his eyes away from the lovely tree with tendrils of the ever famous Sakura. As his eyes focused on that person who had called out to him, a smile immediately formed on his lips. It was unfortunate to have this young man be trained for the trade when all he could see in him was his pure soul.
"Kazuya." the old man acknowledged the person standing next to him. Kazuya's face was all one needed to see to arouse their protective instinct. It was true that Kazuya could be mischievous and as innocent as a child but the elder man knew that Kazuya is a tough nut to crack.
"Here's your umeboshi ochazuke and green tea." Kazuya said before bending down to place the wooden tray containing the food beside the old man. The umeboshi ochazuke was one of 'father's' favorite snacks. It was made with leftover rice and pickled sour plums, soaked in hot tea.
Johnny nodded and focused his gaze again on the scenery ahead of him. He had inherited this okiya from his grandfather. Well, it was not really an okiya before. It was an estate, with lots of trees and flowering shrubs. The grass was green and the smell of earth mixed with the sweet fragrance of flowers wafted in the air, tickling their sense of smell. How he missed the days of his childhood. Those days were fun. He used to run around the place and play, roll on the grass, feed the kois swimming in the man-made pond that lay between two sturdy Sakura trees.
But all was gone now. Everything went askew and the next thing the family knew was that they were left with almost half of the huge land they owned. It was only fortunate that they had gotten the garden area.
"Kazuya,"
"Yes, father?" the young male replied as he watched butterflies fly around the bushes, dancing almost as they flutter around.
"Do you know why I love staying here almost every morning?"
"No, father. I don't."
"It’s simply because the garden reminds me of my childhood. It reminds me of the past wherein I don't have to worry about life and I don't have ridiculous, hard-headed tenants to look after."
Kazuya pouted at his 'father'. "But you enjoy having us here, don't you, father?"
"Maybe." Johnny said and let out a soft chuckle to which Kazuya smiled.
"Kazuya, you do know what will happen to you now that you have started your training to become a geisha, right?" he asked before biting off a small part of the umeboshi, took his time to chew the snack.
Kazuya smiled a little before he focused his eyes on the gentle sway of the falling petals. "I do, father. But like Takizawa-kun had said, we become geishas because we don't have any choice. It is hard to fight what one was destined to become." he'd replied to the old man.
"You know that I have given you a choice, just like what I did to everyone else." Johnny said, referred to the options he'd given Kazuya and the others before they started their formal training as apprentice geishas.
"That was true. But I, like all my seniors, cannot just turn my back on all the good things you've done to me. Father, I have come to accept the fact that I will be living with the trade. I am okay with it. And I am very grateful to you for being so kind."
"Have you no regrets, Kazuya?"
"I had my doubts, my own what ifs. But with the path I have chosen to take, at least I know that I will have a purpose. Who knows? I might have end up much miserable if you have not taken me under your care." Kazuya said before he turned and smiled at the old man. He had come to love Johnny-san for being nice. If not for him, maybe all of them living in the okiya might have ended in jail or something worse and cruel than that.
Both 'father' and Kazuya did not dare speak after that and had decided to just admire the soft swirls of the petals as it was kept afloat by the gentle wind.
-----
The sunset was fast approaching and Kazuya was busy playing his fue with Tatsuya beside him, strumming the strings of the shamisen gently.
They were sitting on the wooden flooring. Kazuya's legs were dangling, swaying his feet to and fro while Tatsuya had his supporting the shamisen. They were playing a soft melody but the knocks on the main door distracted them both. Kazuya immediately rose to his feet and walked towards the main entrance of the okiya.
As he opened the door, the enticing face of Takizawa-kun greeted him. The older male was smiling at him and Kazuya returned it with the same warm smile he could give.
Takizawa-kun looking so fresh and beautiful in his rust-colored kimono with the pattern of the setting sun and its fading rays was enough to make Kazuya long to wear such kimono. The obi that was tied around Takizawa's waist was in the color of gold, its obijime in the shade of scarlet. In his head, a narrow wood made of the cherry tree can be seen adorning his hair. It was similar to the length of the chopsticks but is wider in diameter and it has strings of glass beads hanging at the tip and in different colors.
"Kazuya-kun, can you let me come in now?" a teasing undertone was evident in the elder male's voice.
Kazuya’s cheeks became a light shade of pink and nodded as he moved three steps to the right to allow Takizawa-kun to enter the okiya.
Takizawa Hideaki invited himself and chuckled when he saw his junior looking so embarrassed.
"Kame-chan, you don't have to feel so ashamed."
Kazuya just smiled at his senior and had accepted the Japanese umbrella Takizawa-kun was carrying to set it aside in a corner.
"Is father available?" the elder male asked.
"Yes, Takizawa-kun. Father is at his study, reading his books." Kazuya informed the other man.
Tackey nodded and smiled, "That old man can be idle when he wants to." he chuckled. "I will go see father, Kame-chan. See you at dinner." and the man excused himself, left Kazuya behind.
Kazuya saw Takizawa-kun praise Tat-chan from playing the shamisen well and he heard Tatsuya say his thanks before continuing to play the instrument with much ease. Kazuya watched Takizawa-kun walk, almost glide, with so much grace even though it was difficult to do so as he was wearing the okobo which all geishas wear on their feet. The okobos have thongs to keep and support the foot and are made of wood. They are usually high, very much like the wedge, only even.
Even with his back facing Kazuya, the younger male noticed that Takizawa-kun walked with his back kept straight, his head not held too high or too low. Kazuya wondered if he could ever walk in such graceful manner.
Kazuya made his way back to where his best friend was and sat beside Tatsuya again. "ne, Tat-chan," he started, "do you think we could be like Takizawa-kun someday? Do you think we would be able to earn such good reputation as geishas?"
Tatsuya came to a stop, the gentle twang of the shamisen's chords eventually faded. The elder man looked at his friend and smiled, "If we put our heart to it, then we won't have reasons why we can't."
Tatsuya's words were simple but it reached Kazuya's heart.
-----
The next morning came and Kazuya was asked to help Takizawa-kun put on his kimono.
It may sound simple but Kazuya knew it wasn't. To those who are not familiar on wearing the kimono will think of it as simply as putting it on and wrapping it around one's body, tying it to keep the gown in place.
But it was not as simple as that.
Wearing the kimono takes so much of a skill, like how Ikuta-san had mastered playing the shamisen or how the senior geishas had managed to walk in their okobos without tripping.
Kazuya slid the door with paper screen open. Takizawa-kun's room was as big as Kazuya's and Tatsuya's, only that Takizawa has no roommate. The futon was placed in the right most corner of the room and on the other side was the dresser. On the futon lay an exquisite kimono that was lime green in color with patterns of the Sakura tree and floating petals on its lower half that was made with silken threads. It must have cost a lot since the material looked like it was made with utmost care.
Kimonos are a geisha’s treasure, to the okiya even because every piece costs a lot of fortune. It was a given that geishas wear only the most beautiful and expensive ones and the more the Kimono looked flawless, the more expensive the dress will be. Usually, the dannas provide their geishas kimonos that are exquisitely done. Expensive kimonos are given as gifts as they are known to be gestures of goodwill.
"Kazuya, did you come here to lend me a hand or not?" he heard Takizawa-kun chuckle.
"ne, Takizawa-kun, your kimono is very pretty." Kazuya answered as he made his way to the elder man.
"It is. My danna had given that to me and had requested for me to wear that today." Takizawa informed his young apprentice.
"It must have cost a lot..."
"To be a danna, one must be wealthy because he would be the geisha's provider." Takizawa said, smiling at Kazuya who was, by now, handing him the silk slip called as koshimaki or hip wraps that are to be wrapped around the hip area.
Kazuya had assisted his senior by handing Takizawa-kun all the pieces that are to be worn underneath the kimono. After the koshimaki had been secured in place, it was soon followed by a short-sleeved kimono undershirt which was tied at the waist. Then comes the pads which look like small contoured pillows with strings affixed to its ends for tying. The next piece would be the other under robe that was tied around the waist before the kimono, itself, was to be worn. It was tied around the waist by a datejime to keep the gown in place.
It would be then followed by the obi. The obi is actually as long as a man's height and as wide as a woman's shoulder. It actually covers the area from the breastbone down to the area below the navel. A half dozen cords and clasps are needed to keep the obi in place and paddings are inserted to shape and hold the knot. Only then the kimono ensemble becomes complete.
Takizawa-kun studied his reflection in the mirror and smiled seeing how straight his kimono looked. "Kame-chan, you have a talent for putting on the kimono." he praised the young man. Kazuya's hands had worked calmly but firmly and his fingers had played with the cords but had secured them in a tight knot.
"Thank you, Takizawa-kun." Kazuya bowed and had opted to ask the one thing that he'd noticed about putting on the ensemble. "Takizawa-kun, why is it that the obi's knot be tied at the back?"
Tackey looked at the man then, "Obis' that are secured in front are a mark of those who work at the jorou-ya. Prostitutes as they are known." he said in an as a-matter-of-fact tone. "We geishas are artists. Entertainers. We have undergone training and education to become one. We are different from those who work at the jorou-ya. Do you understand me, Kame-chan?"
Kazuya nodded as knowledge became known to him. As he gets along this training, he gets to know and understand more deeply the path he had chosen to take.
Kazuya stared at his senior's figure and caught a glimpse of Takizawa-kun's neck. "Why do you have to have the back of your neck painted, Takizawa-kun?" Kazuya asked, peering at the fence-like design that was adorning Takizawa-kun's nape.
"Ah, that? That is called the sanbon-ashi. It basically means three legs. Kame-chan, you know that men get a different kind of pleasure when he sees the bare skin beneath a geisha's make-up, right? That's why we have to leave some spaces in our face and neck bare. It excites them more."
"I see..."
"But remember that we are men. Geishas that are men. We're not really expected to put make-up on our faces and this sanbon-ashi I have in my nape was due to the request of my danna. My danna is like a child sometimes." Takizawa-kun almost giggled and Kazuya just smiled. The happiness that was evident in his senior's eyes was proof enough that he was happy with his danna.
The next thing Kazuya knew was that his senior had taken out a small, rectangular box that he soon learned contained Takizawa-kun's hair ornaments. There were combs the shape of the half-sun and all were intricate in design. There are some that are made of wood, some of metal but are either varnished or painted with a glossy color. All had different strings of ornaments, like artificial flowers, pearls, beads and whatever else. Each of the hair ornament looked pretty and is lovely. Kazuya saw his senior held out a small comb and inserted the ends to his hair that was all gathered up at the back of his head, secured in a bun.
"Kame-chan, you must remember to treat your hair ornament as if they are your undergarments. They are an intimate piece of a geisha's costume. It is like the kimono and you must take good care of all that is yours." Tackey told the younger man who had his eyes fixed on him.
Kazuya nodded his reply. "Do we really have to arrange our hair in a bun?"
Tackey smiled and gently shook his head. "No. Back in the past, geishas have their own unique hairstyles. But we cannot possibly do that since it entails that we should grow our hair long to the level of our waist before we can do the wareshinobu and the momoware. Also, such hairstyles are difficult to maintain. We would have to go to the hairdresser all the time to have it done. Plus the fact that we are not allowed to wash our hair unless we are willing to let our hair down is just plain unthinkable!"
Kazuya laughed softly when he saw a horrified expression cross his senior's face. That would be a nasty thing to deal with, he thought.
"Now, Kame-chan, I should get going. We don't want my danna waiting for me for too long." the elder male said as he stood up, handing Kazuya a pair of cotton socks known as tabi. Kazuya took the tabi from his senior's hands and slipped it on Takizawa-kun's feet, one after the other.
"You're all set to go, Takizawa-kun." Kazuya said as he stood up and smiled at his senior. He would be accompanying Takizawa-kun until they reached the bridge and from there, they will go on separate ways.
