***WARNING*** - LONG POST
[and may contain course language]
Okay so its been a HUGE week from Monday last week till Sunday just gone so I will go day by day.... But here is a little bit of a preface to my week:
So there is a pub. Its called the Duke of Windsor and for my international friends who read this - its the one that is name dropped in the Jet song Get Me Outta Here. This is where Jet was "discovered". This pub has been an adopted local for Cami and I for a few years now (not cos of Jet) but due to The Pictures having played a hell of a lot of gigs there. Anyway, I digress. The Duke has been sold and they new owners are going to turn it into some fucken yuppy pizza joint and there will no longer be live music there. Like so many before it, another revered local live venue has succumb to the slow sippers and upper class fucks.
So here is is the wrap up of a week of goodbye gigs held at the venue called "The Duke: Last Drinks"...
Monday - "Come in swap your coin for poison"
Monday was the industry only, invite only drinks at The Duke to mingle and say a goodbye to the pub we all know and love so much. I went with Mel, as Cami is O/S. We just had a couple of drinks, said hello to those who needed to be said hello to and then watched a bit of the band. It wasn't really all that great with some people whom I would've liked to have seen not in attendance.
Tuesday - "Thats pretty rit ya dick'ed"
Dinner at Thai Tables with Holly and Greezy. It was soooooo gooood. I'd never had thai before that and I will never look back!! It was so damn good that I invited then round this week for take away at home, but that will be later in this update.
Wednesday - "And the Lord said... 'You're all a bunch of c*nts'"
Well it was bittersweet going to the The Duke on Wednesday night to see the Lord - Tim Rogers - supporting (yes I said SUPPORTING!!) The Pictures, without Cami there. Tim was on fire - he was in good spirits and gave it his all. Their set was fantastic, and as I promised Cami, I took my camera and took heaps of photos. The Pictures also put on a fine performance - one of the best I've seen from them in quite a while. Davey seemed more relaxed and less angry. I was taking some great shots of them, until half way through the set, Spazmole decided to come stand in front of me. I got a dirty look from her too (probably cos I was taking pics of her man). And swamp donkey was there too, on the other side of the stage - she saw me, but I kinda hid behind some other girls in order to get some Luke shots hehe. I was noticed from stage thats for certain (and Cami if you read this, we now have a new song - DYWK has been replaced by To The Top). Didn't get to catch up with the boys afterwards though, as I was tired and had no friends there and just went home. But it was a great night, albeit sad that it would be the last time I see The Pictures on the stage that I've seen them play so many times before, and not having Scott and Cami there to share the love with me. Rang Daveit and Cahir on the way home (only people in the world up at that hour haha) and had a wee chat about nothing much.
Thursday - "Its been a hard days night"
Had a fantastic guest lecturer on Thursday at school - was really interesting. Her name is Tina Grundmann and she has done everything! She is now starting up her own company doing what I originally set out to do with Red Circle Music and that was to become a "middle man" between bands and various other contacts. So I asked her about work experience and she is all for it. Then I worked Thursday night - no one to call as Cami is O/S haha I was so bored, and started feeling like I was getting the flu again. As I left work, I checked my phone and low and behold had a message from Leah telling me that they had found a ticket for Sunday night for me and that it would be on the door and no-one else would get it. I had to pay but I certainly wasn't complaining about that at all.
Friday - "I've got Friday on my mind"
I got called in to work early so I worked 1-6 instead of 6-9.30. I was happy with that. I still was feeling like I was getting the flu so I came home and didn't really do much, other than listen to the Triple J Impossible Music Fesitval - where they played all these fantastic live sets they had recorded over the past 30 years. I listened to Violent Femmes, Franz Ferdinand, The Living End and I stayed up for The Smashing Pumpkins set (which I already have on tape) and to tape The Split Enz set. It was awesome.
Saturday - "Saturday, saturday night's alright"
Well mum and dad left home at 5am Saturday morning for their week long holiday to Broome in Western Australia. I made sure I was up to tape the INXS set at 11am, and it was soo good, followed by Jeff Buckley, which I had to leave the tape running for as I had to leave for work. I worked and came home to an empty house - just me and the dog. Got the tape ready for ACDC, and set the video to tape Rage as Billy Corgan was guest programming it and they were playing all pumpkins videos afterward.
Sunday - "This is our last goodbye"
So came Sunday. I worked in the morning, which worked out perfectly for me to get home in time to tape You Am I at 3pm and Nirvana at 7pm (again had to leave it running as I left). Got ready for the last ever live gig at the Duke. I had a bit of a dilemma in what to wear but in the end I thought why not see it out wearing what suited the place. So I opted not to get all dolled up and instead pulled out the check shirt, the tight dak and the black boots (not jacket Cami as it was warm as a slut on the weekend). Did my makeup and off I went. Chucked on the Dallas Crane cd for good measure. I got there about 8.15 and Cannon had already started, but they put in a great set. Found Mel and James from tafe as I walked in and got on the light beers with Mel as I already knew I wanted to come home and not stay at Mel's (just wasn't feeling it without Cami there - my one and only gig buddy). So that was great. Stood there and started watching 67 Special set up, having a bit of a D&M with Mel about guys and our lack of boyfriend's at the minute and got into talking about Luke when who should walk up?? Luke and slappa. I had just finished telling Mel about her and Luke bowled right up to me to say hi. It was really awkward for all involved as Luke and I instantly struck up a conversation and kinda left carrie and Mel out of it. Until Mel broke it by offering her introductions to carrie and then I introduced her to Luke. A very funny moment now as I look back.
Whats even funnier is that as soon as they walked away Mel turns to me and tells me how ugly carrie is. HAHAHAHA I was in fits of laughter. That is one thing I definately love about Mel and thats her brutal honesty, she just comes out with it! The other thing she said to me straight away as that he likes me. Now this is someone who doesn't know the story, doesn't know the history, has never met this guy and in terms of our friendship we are still getting to know each other. I was quite taken aback by her instant observation. But I was happy with it.
So 67 Special hit the stage and I went to my "spot" so I could take photos. They came out pretty crap cos I was getting bumped and having to hold my camera up over peoples heads (but I will post some from all the gigs as soon as I resize them). They played a great set - I really enjoyed it and will partake of their new album within the next few weeks (depending on cash flow).
Next up was Dallas Crane. Hmmmm pwhoar yes HOT!! I have said it many times before - they are a sexual band! Pabur looked hot, Parko looked hot, even Petey and Shan looked hot. Hot damn! Got the "eye" from Parko a couple of times and Pabur too, but I think Pabur was looking for Cami. They played the fucken best set ever and sent off the Duke in the bestest dirtiest rock way possible, complete with the Lord, Timmy Rogers taking to the stage for the encore. When it was all over, Mel and myself parked our arses at one of the tables in the front of the bar with James and his housemates, which eventually ended up as just the 3 of us sitting there and reminiscing, taking photos and talking random shite (as you do at the Duke). I spotted Luke and carrie leaving and I knew that he would return - I could see it in his walk. And he did. Looks over the bar ensued. But it was about this time that Mel spotted Parko and nicked off to have a chat with him, as James and I sat talking more shit. Next thing I know, she's brought him back to the table to introduce us (well me, but James was just there too and it was polite). I got a handshake and then out of the blue he's reached in for the peck on the cheek!!! OMG!! I could not fucking believe it!!! I am now on Parko's pecking order!! (Does that explain it now Scott??) I played it cool though, as James told him great show and I agreed saying it was under such a sad pretense though. But he looked like he was on his way out when Mel went up to him so he bid us farewell and left.
Not long after, Luke and Johnny were headed for the door, when Luke just "had" to stop to say bye to some chump and just happened to catch my eye and head over to the table. He leant over the table, planted a peck and told me about how The Deserters had just done an EP and that he wanted to give me one. So I said that I would be a Ruby's on Friday night and he should bring it then. It was all good. As we bid our goodbyes and I sat down again, Mel just says "he soo likes you". So that was my fantabulous night.
We sat there for a little bit longer, then Mel and James decided to head to the afterparty and I home. So I took a few more inside photos of the bar and the band room, hugged the bar, hugged the staff and headed out. I crossed the road and took a couple of pics outside and then headed to the car.
I couldn't stop grinning all the way home.
Good times, sad times, but what a week!
I'm sure there will be another update come the weekend after Friday night's gig.
Photos added soon and sorry about the length if you bothered to read all of this.
