I had this whole defensive rant about Glee that I was about to post, but I went back and rewatched part of last night's episode, and understood better what they were trying to accomplish. But I do have this to say:

Defying Gravity is a song about breaking away from what is safe, what is comfortable, what is expected. 'defying gravity' is the tag I use on entries about moving to Toronto and trying to find theatre work, going against the advice of friends and family to play it safe and stay where I was, because I have to attempt this. If I fail, I fail, but, like the lyrics state, "till I try I'll never know". This song is so important to me, is so powerful, is such an anthem about breaking barriers and struggling to achieve what may be perceived as impossible. What Defying Gravity is not is a "girl's song", and Kurt was right to fight for a chance to sing it.

What would have made a more powerful statement, though, is if he had not flubbed the high F on purpose in order to 'lose' the diva-off. He could very well have won the competition and then given the solo to Rachel anyway. I understand that what he did ensured that he was the one making the decision not to sing at sectionals, and not his castmates, but now he will never know whether or not it could have been him. And that is the WHOLE MESSAGE OF THE SONG! Trying for something, not knowing whether or not you'll succeed. So that made me upset.

LOL, defensive Amy is defensive.

oh bitchcakes, defying gravity, soundtrack of my life, soapboxes on streetcorners
