Writing to Buffy

In the past few years, Cordelia's spent quite a lot of time in hospitals. Most of it was as a patient, but she's quickly learning that it's almost as miserable being there as a visitor. Hours upon hours of sitting around and waiting interspersed with bad television, old magazines and tasteless food. The rest of the time is spent waiting for any of a team of what seems like a dozen doctors to show up for five minutes and bring you news of your loved one's condition. One day it might be a neurologist, another a cardiologist, yet another a general practitioner. And they all have different ideas on what the problem is and what will help the patient. Ideas that, as far as Cordelia's witnessed, all seem to conflict.

And then there's the mystical people Wesley has wandering around, muttering under their breath in ancient languages and waving foul-smelling incense over Kara's bed. When they come around, Cordelia escapes to the waiting room because, frankly, they creep her the hell out.

So it's on one of those afternoons, when she's waiting for the mages to finish their maging, that Cordelia finds herself with the waiting area all to herself. Given the amount of traffic that's been coming in and out of Kara's room since she was first brought there, it's a rare occurence. She decides to take advantage of the peace and quiet and finally write a letter to Buffy, something she's been meaning to do for days.

Dear Buffy,

Hey there, it's Cordelia again. I haven't heard from you in a while, so I hope everything's okay with you and the Bufflet.

I might as well just get right to the point, because we both know I've never been good with the small talk. Kara's in a coma. It happened a couple of days ago, in Chicago. I still don't know the whole story, but what I've been told so far is that while she was in Rome a few weeks ago trying to un-kidnap Darla, she did something to allow the spirit of a woman named Catherine Manners take over her body. I don't know how much you know about Wolfram & Hart, but they're this worldwide evil law firm - and by that, I don't just mean your run-of-the-mill lawyer evil. I'm talking serious, end-the-world evil. They have a branch in L.A. that we used to deal with when we were there, and one of the bigwigs was Holland Manners. He and his wife, Catherine, were killed a few years ago (along with quite a few of the firm's upper-level lawyers) by Darla and Drusilla. Anyway, for whatever reason, Kara invited Catherine to use her, and she ended up possessed by her spirit without anyone else knowing.

She talked me into taking her to Chicago once she got back home, and since I already suspected something was wrong, I agreed so I could keep an eye on her. I'm obviously a sucky babysitter because she got away from me somehow. Anyway, I don't have enough paper for the director's cut of this story, so I'll give you the theatrical version. Darla and Dru had her. They did some sort of soul mojo, using Catherine's daughter as bait, and chased her soul out of Kara's body. Kara's soul came back for a minute or so, then she blacked out and she's been in a coma ever since.

She's all right physically, though. The doctors all say she's completely healthy, but no one can figure out why the coma. So until they do, or until she decides to wake up on her own, we're all in Boston with her, at the hospital. Waiting.

Try not to worry about her. We're all here with her. Wesley and Ben flew back from England and all of her friends have been by to see her and talk to her. Orlando's even here with me for moral support, even though he's never met her. So we've got things covered. I just thought you'd wannt to know what was going on. I'll write to you again after she wakes up. She will wake up. We just don't know when.

Take care of yourself,
Cordy

When she's done, she folds it up, writes Buffy's name on the outside, then walks out to the courtyard by the cafeteria and leaves it on an empty bench. When she gets back inside, she turns to look back out the door and sees it's already gone.

kara, hospital, buffy
