Once bitten, twice shy

Mad

It's easy to annoy Cordelia, to irritate her. Sometimes it's easier to tick her off than it is to make her happy. She just doesn't have a lot of patience for other people, not unless they're her friends and they matter to her. But to make her truly mad? That takes a lot. For her, it's more likely that she'll have a flare of irritation and then cool off again within minutes.

In order to make her mad, you have to do something pretty major. Lie to her (and even then she only cares about that if she cares about you - the degree of her resulting anger depends on how much she cares about you. The more she cares, the more she trusts you, the angrier a lie will make her), cheat on her, make her feel foolish, try to kill her, fire her and give away all of her clothes... these are some of the things that will set her off. And once she'd mad, once she's crossed that line from minor annoyance to full-out anger, then it's going to be a rocky road to forgiveness. Cordelia is capable of it, there's no question of that, but once you've made her mad, that forgiveness isn't easily given.

Sometimes it just takes time. A few years, maybe more, maybe less, a little space. It all depends. Sometimes it takes a grand gesture of remorse - say, buying her an entire wardrobe to replace what was lost. Other times? Groveling. She does love a good grovel, though that won't always be enough. She can be a tough bitch, that Cordelia, but that's because she has to be. She's learned the hard way how easy it is to break her heart, and therefore she shields it fiercely, being careful who to let in, who to trust. Break that trust, break her heart... well, there's a saying out there: "once bitten, twice shy." That's Cordelia. Hurt her once, she's going to be doubly cautious in the future when it comes to trusting you again.

She will trust you again, though, if she thinks you're worth it. She's just going to make you work for it. It's her way, and she feels she's worth the trouble.
