It's the government's place to shut the fuck up and get out of people's business.

Oh, I'm not good at the 'us' thing either.

I rarely feel like the government is a representative of me. Actually, I'm not representative of most of society either.

But its a requirement of any state or national structure to provide a basic regulatory ruling on our lives. That's we elect them for- to formalize the manner in which we live.

I don't know much about the Mormons, I'll admit. Neither do I know much about their marriages or divorces. But if one couple does decide to divorce, without any proper legal ruling on the matter, either and both of those individuals would be left wide open to exploitation depending on how the other wanted to spin it. The man could simply say Wife #X was married polygamously or illegally and therefore he shouldn't have to give her alimony or child support beyond the minimum. The split of property becomes problematic. Even the ethics of naming becomes problematic. Legal recognition of a relationship is one of the cornerstones of society.

The governments (both yours and mine) need to get their heads out of their asses on a lot of things such as gay marriage and the legal adoption of children by homosexual couples. And of course they're corrupt; they're human and they're made up of representatives of a corrupt society.

Considering the tough job they face, I'm inclined to say the government's necessay every once in a while.
