Interesting attempts to learn

Apr 10, 2010 17:01

In my, almost random, attempts to learn Japanese I decided to try to read raw mangas, of course, according to my tastes BL is probably the best choice, if I am going to rack my brains to understand something, I have to be really interested in it.
I am going to start with one of my favorite mangakas, Suzuki Tsuta, and one of her newest mangas Merry Checker. My acknowledge of Japanese is near to zero, hope you can help me, any suggestions are welcomed.
My tools: EDICT, Wikipedia, Tim's Takamatsu.

Mitsuya: 先輩、さっき青山に 聞かれたんすけど.今日 の合コン 先輩 来れないかって

  • 先輩 [senpai]: polite way to address a senior
  • さっき [sakki]: some time ago
  • 青山 [aoyama]: blue or green mountain. I am guessing they are actually referring to the place. This is a name.
  • に [ni]: There we have it, the particle that indicates that 青山 is a place or the indirect object of the sentence.
  • 聞かれ たんす [kikaretansu]: 聞 かれる is ‘to be asked’ (passive); then 聞かれた is ‘was/were asked’. What does the んす stand for??. 聞かれたのです
  • けど [kedo]: connects the two sentences together to express a contradiction
  • 今日 [kyou]: today
  • の[no]: in this case it means ’s
  • 合コン [goukon]: mixer, joint party
  • 来れない[korenai]: or 来 られない, means ‘to not be able to come’ (potential negative)
  • かって[katte]: I guess か stands as a question mark, but that って? This is used as a quote mark sometimes but I can’t understand it here. Second part is a question made by Aoyama, quoted with って

Probably: Senpai, a while ago we were invited to Aoyama but, aren’t you unable to come to today’s mixer?
Better: Senpai, I was just asked by Aoyama if you were going to today’s mixer/joint party

Shiomi: あー 悪い 今日はオレ用事あんだわ

  • あー [aaa]: just a sound, like ‘Oh’
  • 悪い [warui]: means bad, in this case it could be ‘my bad’
  • は [ha,pronounced wa]: topic marker
  • オレ [ore]: ‘I’ for men?
  • 用事 [youji]: tasks, errands.
  • あんだ [anda]: ??? or あるんだ means ‘the fact is that’
  • わ [wa]: feminine lady-like boastful ender for statements. (Shiomi is a weird character, he is playful but sometimes seems prideful)

Probably: Oh, sorry, today I have some things to do.
Better: Ah, sorry! I have got plans today.

Mitsuya: もしかして、まだアレですか。『オフ会』ですっけ

  • もしかして[moshikashite]: perhaps
  • まだ [mada]: still or more
  • アレ[are]: ?? array? or is it the same as あれ (that thing)? Katakana is just a way to emphasize here
  • ですか[desuka]: question, present and polite way.
  • オフ [ofu]: off
  • 会[kai]: meeting
  • ですっけ [desukke]: Hmm, can this stand as a question, but what about that っけ? (and でしたけ) are used when you’re recalling something, but unsure if you’re remembering or saying it right.

Probably: Perhaps, is it about that thing yet? is it the『offline meeting』? (what a lame translation!!)
Better: It couldn’t still be about that right? What is it called, an “off-gathering”?

Shiomi: そう そう
Means: That’s right

Mitsuya: オフ会って 何なんですか
  • オフ会って[ofukaitte]: って is used as a way to quote someone
  • 何 なんですか[nannandesuka]: or 何なのですか what is that?

Probably:“offline meeting” what is that?
Better: What’s an “Off-gathering”?

Shiomi:あー。。ネットの友達とリアルで 会うこと?
  • ネッ ト[netto]: net
  • の[no]: ’s
  • 友達 [tomodachi]:friend
  • と[to]: and or with?
  • リアル[riaru]: real
  • で [de]: preposition that shows us where an action takes place
  • 会 う[au]: to meet
  • こと[koto]: situation

Probably: The situation where friends, from the net and real, encounter? or
The situations where net’s friends encounter with the real ones?
Better: Ah…when internet friends meet in real life?

Mitsuya: はあ。。
Means: Ah? Oh

The time it took to write only this shows how much of a newbie I am with this language…well, I guess I’ll get better.
