Character Name: Jean-Paul Beaubier.

Canon source: Marvel 616.

Personality:
There were several directions a childhood like Jean-Paul's could have pushed him toward, and he took the road of the angry, snarky, blunt, grumpy, and sarcastic teenager. He's a pessimist who doesn't expect anything from life and works to get what he has. This doesn't stop him from whining, ever. Whining can become a national sport with the way JP does it.

Life isn't exactly helping him, anyway. He's a mutant, he's gay, he has no guardians anymore -- there is no way he's ever going to be accepted anywhere, and he realises it. It makes him very defensive, and he believes the best defense is to attack first. Not physically (not usually, but he's impulsive and people can very well get his fist in their face if they push) as he's not an inherently violent teenager, but he'll be a bitch to people he doesn't like.

He's very attached to his roots and nationality. He's completely immersed in Québécois politics as a fervent separatist. If asked where he's from, he will answer "Québec" and never "Canada". He's also very picky about French and about the French people, as most separatists in Québec are.

When he likes someone, he's still very blunt and honest with them, but with way less of a bitchy attitude about it. He will go 'white knight' on people easily, and hunt his friends' offenders down. He doesn't let anyone tell him what to do (except if they have a reason to -- he doesn't disrespect authority if he believes they are earning their higher position) and is quite a snob about a lot of things. He likes when people like him but he doesn't crave for approval.

His first language is French, and his English could be better, but he doesn't care because French is a much better language anyway. Right? Right! And Québec is the most awesome place ever. Don't try and change his mind because it won't work! JP is be a bit of a xenophobe, somehow. Or, at the very least, he's prone to prejudices and racism.

On a random note, even if JP is a snob, he's a snob in a self-absorbed way. Not in rich/limo/suit way. He likes beer; wine and champagne are for the French.

History:
Jean-Paul Beaubier was born in Montréal, Québec, and has a twin sister named Jeanne-Marie. When he was still a very young kid, their parents died in a car crash and he was separated from his sister after they were adopted into different families. He grew up without knowing he has a twin somewhere.

He's an annoying rebellious teenager, and is once caught stealing by a man called Raymonde Belmonde. [Here, I'm going to guess it's a mistake from the comic writers because 'Raymonde' is a woman's name, and say he was really called Raymond.] Raymond gets Jean-Paul into skiing, which gives him something to do with his time and attention. He also helps the teenager accept his homosexuality.

His adoptive parents also die a few years later, because everyone knows you become a better superhero if you're orphaned. Twice.

Anyway, when he becomes a competitive skier, his powers manifest and render the sport completely worthless and boring since he always wins no matter what. However, seeing that he doesn't have any guardians anymore and isn't being told what to do, he figures making himself a young Olympic medalist will bring in money.

He's planning to go to Vancouver 2010 (it's even in his country, so, there) but, of course, things all go to hell because he gets teleported into this new universe here. In New Mexico. He hates life.

PS: Do not ask how he was planning to hide his pointy ears, 616's continuity and logic are hideous like that...

How does your AU differ from canon?
It is not an AU in the purest sense of the term. It's very much 616, as much as I can make it, but JP appears in 616 as an adult and I am, instead, stopping his history at the point where he's still a teenager. The only major change is the date: JP was born in 1993 (January 19th because it is the coldest day of the winter). He never appears as a teenager in canon, however. I am using the background available on him in 616 canon and making a teenager out of him from there.

Strengths:
Jean-Paul has three powers: superspeed, flight and light manipulation. Light manipulation is not anything he can do well at all, yet. He knows he has some sort or power related to this because he can glow in the dark, but hasn't worked on it since he sees it as useless and boring. His superspeed is the power he likes the most, and he's been working on this one. As he hasn't gotten much experience with his powers, he hasn't reached the maximum speed he will, yet. He can run really fast, sure, but it still takes him a few minutes to cross a continent (not fast enough to do anything about the chip). His speed will increase with time, and may get sufficient at some point, we'll see. He prefers to run than to fly, and can run faster than he can fly, but he can fly well and has good maneuverability.

As for other strengths, JP's heightened speed allows him to think faster than the normal person -- which doesn't mean he's smart, although it means he's good with numbers. He's good looking, which is totally a strength, and has very good stamina. He can move heavy things while running (or another person) but this is mostly due to the momentum he can gather, and he may end up dropping to the ground when he stops because he doesn't have any superstrength. He's determined and that makes him hard to manipulate with words alone.

Weaknesses:
He's weak against a lot of power types. Mainly, he can do nothing against mental powers, he can do nothing long range (for now -- if he can concentrate on his light manipulation long enough, he may discover the energy blasts), and if someone neutralises his speed, he's defenseless.

He's prone to his bad temper, so his emotions get the better of him. This also means he might be fired from half a dozen jobs before he puts away enough money to move out of New Mexico. He's insanely blunt, and refuses to be wrong, which makes him very annoying. He's not someone who will make friends easily -- he may push away more people than do this, actually. He's not nice naturally, and he only acts nice when he knows someone. He has a very hard time arguing effectively, but he's still stubborn; it's not a very attractive mix. We can add that he is narcissistic in the mix, just to complete the picture.

His English is bad. He'll have a hard time understanding people in New Mexico and this will not help at all. It's going to be a huge obstacle for him to live in a southern US environment, primarily because of the language barrier.
