turns out all you have to do to get a letter in the New Yorker is be really, really terse, accept that they will cut you down to be even terser, write in the muted-declamatory style of the New Yorker, and get a lucky break on a slow news/letters week.

Also, two years ago I wrote: "...if I were [Obama's] political advisor I would worry about him ending up like Carter: his decency mistaken for timidity, his inevitable mistakes compounded by inherited structural problems which no one could solve quickly and for which he was blamed even when he laid the essential foundations for their eventual amelioration."

my LJ = your source for the conventional wisdom of two years from now! Except that my crystal ball software isn't working these days-- the future is apparently classified, now, and crystal ball server maintainers are being pursued under the Espionage Act...
