Wineblogging: birthday tasting notes

Man, what a party. How nice to mark another year of one's own aging by drinking old wines that have aged exceptionally well!

1991 Laurel Glen Counterpoint Cuvee: smooth and Bordeaux-ish and lovely, one of the best Sonoma Cabs I've ever had. A great way to start the night.

1994 Chateau Latour a Pomerol: even smoother, with just enough dark undertone to make it interesting.

1997 Phelps Cabernet: amazingly big and tannic for a wine that old. A beautiful wine and an excellent contrast, but if I'd known it'd aged that little I might have given it a couple more years in the cellar.

2004 Chateau Montrose: smoky, rich, earthy.

2007 Pride Mountain Sangiovese: a very rare find from a friend who loves Pride Mountain, this was full of blackberry and rounded tannins, orders of magnitude better than the typical harsh and uninteresting California Sangiovese.
