Guys, I love my night class. I still hate that it's a night class, and killing seven hours in Denton waiting around for it is maddening, but omg tonight I took like four and a half pages of straight notes, with no random doodling. About typography. The class is covering the explosion that happened with the invention of movable type, and for some reason I find all that absolutely fascinating. Learning about how the first typefaces came about was actually very interesting. I want to be a type geek. It interests me, I just don't seem to have a sense for it. But this class is actually making me love design again. Hearing about the very beginnings of graphic design and seeing where this mess comes from is really interesting, even down to the people who first started doing rough layouts before setting type to print something. And my professor is entertaining too, which makes it even more fun.
It also makes me want to be a history geek somehow. Like, I should have learned about all the context surrounding this stuff, and known what else was going on in the world then, but I just don't remember things like that...it doesn't help that the schools were so much more interested in beating American/Texas history into our heads...I think I've only had one class in world history ever in high school, taught by a basketball coach, I'm pretty sure. I remember being more interested in that back then, too. (I also vaguely remember dad being all "WELL READ THE BIBLE THAT IS HISTORY!" when I mentioned it...back when he was still being obnoxious about religion. 9_9) Honestly? America is pretty much boring compared to most of these older countries. Which isn't to say I'm completely disinterested in the country's history. Um, I seem to have gotten an interest in the prohibition era in particular from Baccano. >_> Learning about the end of the shogunate in the Japanese History class I took made watching Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto more interesting, and I'd like to learn more about that too...Hearing about how when the rest of Europe was flailing over the whole Catholic/Protestant thing, Flanders was building up their merchant fleet was kind of interesting too because I remember that later the Dutch were the only people Japan allowed to trade with them because they were the only ones who agreed not to try to bring religion into that, too. I wish I was better able to keep dates and eras straight in my head, though. I only have a vague sense of when things took place even in more recent decades.
Honestly, I can't say for sure if my interest in history doesn't at least partly stem from the historian muse that seems to still live in my head, but you know what, I don't think it matters why I want to learn. Because I really do want to learn, like to the point of considering going to the library and checking out some books. Yeah, crazy, I know! I was in there studying today, it was surreal. Maybe eventually I will try to do that, when I'm less busy. Um. And learn Japanese, seriously this time.
Waah, I wish I felt this inspired all the time...I actually feel good about stuff, and my brain doesn't feel so much like molasses for once, though it's still not as sharp as I would like it to be. I need a brain sharpener or something! Um.
