I was thinking about the ridiculous cost of sock wool the other day, and what a pity that Bendigo Woollen Mills didn't do a sock yarn, so I thought I'd write to them and ask whether they had any plans, stressing that sock knitting is a big thing and there's certainly a market in Australia for locally produced wool that doesn't cost $25+ for a ball.
Here's the response:
"We do have a small range of sock wool available. It is $4 per 50gm ball & is available in Black, Navy, Fawn or Dark Grey. It's compositon is 75% Wool, 25% Nylon. It is available by mail or phone order only. Unfortunately i don't think there are any plans for the future to expand this range."
I can't believe how cheap that is! Or why they don't advertise it. I figure that if we spread the word and people start ordering it, perhaps they'll be convinced to start producing it in their other colours - after all, they obviously have the machines set up to produce it, so it should just be a matter of putting different coloured roving in.
And as it happened, I wanted black and grey for my next couple of projects, and that's even within my current constrained budget.
Sometimes it pays to write an old fashioned letter with a stamp on it.
