i do recommend briefing cases, or at least putting something down on a computer in addition to class notes. knitting together and editing outlines at exam time is a great learning tool. putting them together from scratch is painful and makes exams worse than they need to be.
if you want to make friends, go to everything. my policy was never to turn down an invitation without a good reason. section dinners, trivia, the bars, wherever. much of it won't suit you (i even went to a club or two), but once you've made yourself available and met some people, you can narrow it back down to the things you actually like. and really, being humiliated by a tough, socratic prof is less painful when you know that the people around you feel your pain.
