Seasonal Fic Fests: Need Feedback from All Artists, Authors, and Readers

Aug 03, 2013 14:29

From the brilliant but  wickedly evil minds of hellbells101, mswriter07, and wolfspirit07, we've come up with a schedule of seasonal fests that would stretch across the three major TFaF communities: quarter_mile, quartermile_km, and dt_garage. For those of you who haven't been over to quartermile_km, I've taken over the maintainer duties at that community so it should be coming live in time for the 2013 Kink Meme so be on the ( Read more... )

Hmmm... personally I'd love to take part in the fests, but I do have a bit of a problem. Well, as for now I'm still a recent high school graduate, on a gap year and living on my parents' tab. And I have a feeling that it would stay like this until summer 2014 at least, but knowing me and my super laziness, it moght be possible that I might want to extend the gap "year" until summer 2015. Anyway, my parents don't want me spending the whole days at home writing new fics etc, not that they even know I'm a fic writer.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that if I could not take part in one fest, would it get any restrictions imposed on me, something like bans from future ones or from taking part in awards ceremony? And if during a fest RL decided to interfere in some way, would a dropout be possible without equaling a ban?

Yeah, I would be intetested in the fests, but if I'd be ready to commit myself to them or even taking part in them is another question. As currently I have already overwhelmed my muse as I'm currently working on 3 F&F stories, all Brian-centric. Might need you guys bribing me with cookies if you'd want one more in the fests. XD

I can't comment for the owners/maintainers but from the experience I've had in the last 5 years your biggest problem will be the Big Bang. As someone with almost no time ever I was afraid of entering challenges until I broke it down into smaller bites/pieces...

If every other fest has a minimum of 1000 words, it is about 2 1/2 pages printed, you are talking about 4 hours of actual writing time once you have the idea in your head for that one month fest. The chances of you finding 2-3 small periods of time to write a small fic for it are fairly good if you are inspired by one of the prompt or theme.

In any case it's one fest at the time, you don't have to commit to all four just to the next one, the one ahead. One step at the time... That's how I wrote about 80% of my fics: one challenge at a time :)

Hope you don't mind my replying ♥

Restrictions (aka bans) are only imposed if you enter a fest, fail to complete your assignment by the deadline, and disappear. Kind of like buying a car and refusing to pay it off. You'll get name blacklisted if the fic doesn't appear within a reasonable amount of time after the deadline.

Now, if you don't sign up, I can't punish you for something you might have done. Doesn't work like that and I'm not that evil. XD There is no requirement that you have to do all the fests as spankedbyspike said. Pick and choose which one suits your fancy.

If you join but are forced to dropout, it would be nice if you inform us as quickly as possible so we can find a pinch hitter to fulfill that assignment or prompt. When it comes to the next fest, you'll probably be forced to go through multiple checkpoints to see how you're progressing. Drop again, you'll be semi banned for a set period. Drop a third time for the same type of fest and you'll be perma-banned for life from that particular fest.

Okay, thanks for the info. At least I have a better grasp at how it works now.

But I'm still thinking if I would be ready to join any of the fests when they come. Maybe I might still need brownie-bribing XD

Well, I think I need the low-down on Ficathlon, that's for Kinkmeme. I just want to know if it's compulsory to write a fic for that one if you have submitted any prompt, like in Fic Exchange? Thing is that, I've never written even a M-rated story before, so I'm just thinking if I should think YOLO and commit myself to it.

I would say no you would NOT have to write something in order to put a kink list out there. There's plenty of people who don't feel comfortable writing smut. So, I don't have an issue with that at all. (We're still figuring out the "rules" to things, so questions like this are awesome cause we know it's things we need to address. So, as long as Spyridon is good with that too, then I guess that'll be how we handle it.)

Which actually reminds me of something. Why don't you write the Kink Meme Prompt Submission post. There are various examples around the web that you can use as a template. Use the Google Doc I set up and I'll edit it there. XD

M'k, I think I have the fest post done... Sitting in Drive waitin' on your feedback. Then when it comes time for submissions I can just use the top, rules, and kink list section.

No, it's more similar to the prompt claiming. You can submit a prompt (or multiple as we're still debating on that issue). I would suggest not using the Kink Meme to step into new, uncharted territory. Not a good idea.

I second that... It's the time you discover your pervy side lol...

So you can post requests/prompts but not fill any and I suppose you can fill more than one then as an author or do a fan-mix or a story banner, etc...?

Correct. You do NOT have to claim/write any requests in order to submit a request (we're also allowing Anon submissions). Also, you'll be able to claim one prompt at a time and when you finish and post you can dive in and claim another. And yup, you can also do art if you want.

Which actually brings up a good point on traditional art. If you want to actually submit a work like that, you will also have to include a PG-13 cut of the original work that's roughly 100x100 to post above the cut. More details on that later.

Hmm, well mon capi-tan... I'm useless when it comes to art stuff so, if you wanna add some notes on rules about that to the Drive so I can add that in... Pwease and thank you? *offers you a cookie bribe*
