How I work - a study - PARTS 3-7

Jul 21, 2007 23:31

So if anyone remembers I was doing a Dragon WIP? Well, I did a couple more hours on the image tonight, thought you might like to see. If you missed parts 1 and 2, they are a few entries back in mmy journal, in fact here: PARTS 1&2

So here are the next few bits: (Put under cut for obvious reasons!)

WORK IN PROGRESS - GOTHIC DRAGON

Just to recap, here's where we finished off last time:

So we'll start from here.

So last time the image was fully greyscale, well I decided to start putting some colour into it. Just using a large brush, the secret here is to use lots of different colours. Dramatic skies look best with lots of different, but subtle, colours.

That dragon needs some definition. He was way too light and sketchy. So I start blocking in some darker areas and a few highlights, just to keep the values correct. I'm trying to define the armour at this stage, as it will form the basis for lots of detail later, so getting the big blocks in the right place to start with is the key.

...And here's some more detail work. Getting the main shapes and shading together now...

The sky was too light, so I've added another layer and darkened those clouds a bit, to make them more foreboding and moody. Listening to dark angsty music at this point helps a lot, but it's not vital ;) I also started to add a bit of detail to the cityscape.

The dragon was way too light for his surroundings. Remember he's in silhoutte as the sky behind is quite bright, so I've darkened him down a lot, and the picture kind of subconsciously makes more sense now. It feels better. Right, that's it for tonight, I'm going to bed. The work on this pic this evening totalled about 2 hours. You can see how the hours add up, but not bad so far, if I may say so :)

Comments most definitely appreciated!!
