When I was about 6, I remember lying on the slide of the old swing set in the back yard, just gazing up at the late afternoon sky. In church that morning, as I sat swinging my legs over the edge of the hard wooden pew, feet not reaching the ground, the preacher had been saying something about eternal life. I hadn't paid much attention, but now, for no particular reason, the concept found its way back to me in somewhat altered form.
Eternity and infinity. I barely knew the words at six. It was a different world then - simpler in a lot of ways. But as I was looking up at that too-blue sky while the sun was setting and the crows were calling and the Florida air was still and heavy, I felt my mind wrap around those two words in a way that was instantly life-transforming.
An odd melancholy settled over me, but simultaneously a great joy and sense of wonder. I felt my awareness looking back at me from infinity, extending into eternity... and I was no longer a six year old child, but some peculiar field of awareness which had only placed itself in the body of that child for a brief time so that it might begin to understand itself from the perspective of eternity and infinity.
I remember lying on that slide for over an hour, until my mother called me in for dinner, and the somewhat jarring experience of going from the cool twilight into the heat of an old wooden house that had no air conditioning and would have fallen down had the termites stopped holding hands.
My heart has been in the nagual ever since that day.
