At Home in an Impossible Room

For many weeks I've been working on a strange project. We have many windows around the house which show views of wooden walls just a few feet from the window. When we moved in I decided to create a false view out of some of these windows to improve the look of these rooms. That will mean one set of windows will look out on our sunlit backyard garden, and the other will look on a virtual landscape of my own creation.

Rather than create something from scratch I pulled old CG images from my unfinished "Copyright for Hire" video teleplay. The original renders were created more than ten years ago. The new image is a mix of photography, 3D CG renders, and lots of hand painting. I printed out the resulting image 3' x 6', and stretched it onto canvass by hand.

My hands are completely shot from the stretching process. I've never stretched a canvass that big before, and since the canvass was preprinted I had to be really careful how I stapled it down and how much stretch I applied. The canvass stretching is done now, but I still need to apply six coats of varnish before I hang it outside my window. I'll have a small bar light to illuminate the canvass once it's in place.

Once done, I'll be able to look up from my desk and view the following dystopia through the nearby window:

paint, photography, canvass, special effects, art, dystopia, video
