Being hippies, my wife and I never saw marriage as necessary. For a long time we felt it was better to wait until we saw a definition of marriage that made any sense to us. We had no religious traditions to define marriage in religious terms for us. We had no social community that didn't already see us as married, and we disagreed strongly with the secular legal definition of marriage. Our main disagreement: we saw marriage as being between lovers who choose to make family and share home. Any gender will do, and any number can work.
