You Said "I'm Gonna Run You Down"

I heard "I'm an orangutan."

I saw the Orangutans play today, and it made me feel like I'd lost two decades. I live not too far from where my parents lived when I started at HSPVA. So today, when old friends were getting their band back together, I got on my bicycle and retraced my old daily route to school. I parked my bike, locked it, and entered school, shedding all sense of my adult self in the process.

The concert was great fun, and I got a decent recoding of it HD. I'll burn off a few DVDs of it at some point soon, when I return from my next LA trip. It was very cool to see those guys together again in that room.

The old school was a shock to my senses. I hadn't been inside since the mid 90s. Possibly earlier. I had a reputation for hanging out there after I graduated, but eventually I had to let go and move on with my life. Just as the Orangutans were seniors when I was a freshman, a new crop of younger students became my closest friends when I was a senior. Hanging out with them while I worked to save up for college just seemed natural. That social circle closed dramatically as members of that old guard and members of the new scene started dating. Thinking of those days makes me recall the desperation and nervous energy I had all the time when I was younger.

The building was familiar yet ancient looking. The grey walls and checkerboard floors seemed to have soaked up more time than the people in it. Perhaps this is because I'm used to seeing the people, but the place is so remote in my experience.

It was very cool seeing some of that new scene at the gig too! Talking to Josh Foster inspired me to go ahead and finally upload a few of my videos to YouTube. I'm not much of a 'joiner', but some of the old videos deserve a second life scaring the people who were in them. I also went through my web site and updated all the links to videos. The complete history of all of my videos is now updated and cross-linked to the videos themselves. Hopefully I'll be ready to make new things and kick new ass real soon now. I keep meaning to stop consuming entertainment and start making it - but making it is MUCH harder than just letting the work of others wash over you.
