So I traded in our Civic for the Fit after all today. After a test drive I found that I really did want to make it happen. It did cost me a bit of cash to cover title and taxes, but my monthlies remain roughly the same. The car is orange. Finn picked the color, but really that was the only pretty color they had in stock.
The main reason I wanted to make the switch is that the Fit is a hatchback, and has sport shifting. That means I can finally choose what gear to be in without the fuss of a clutch. When you start up the car you get to choose Sport Manual or Automatic shifting. The car also has much more room inside that our sedan. One online review in the UK described the car as 'TARDIS-like'. Moving our stuff around in a sedan was getting annoying. My bike only barely fit into the old car. This one has wacky rear seats that flip out of the way.
One of the dealers was evasive and poorly mannered, At one point they had my Civc keys so they could have someone appraise my old car, but they still hadn't made me an offer anywhere near what made sense for us. I was done, so I asked for our keys back. This guy stalled me, and tried to talk about what a great deal his offer really was. Not a good move. After shouting 'what part of 'give me my keys' was unclear?!!' the salesman still wanted to dither about the financials. We just about left, but the actual sales associate who got our sale soothed things over. I wasn't going to get a new car if it put us in a less financially flexible place. The cool thing is that the Fit is Honda's entry level vehicle, so it stickers for less than our last car. (Once we got them to see reason.)
