[ It takes Tony two seconds to hack into her device and switch it back on. He's sitting in the middle of some apartment floor, goggles pushed right back into the mad mess of his hair, a soot smudge all the way up his cheek. The relief in his tone is palpable, but he's trying to tone it down a little.

Teasing. ] Are you moonlighting? Because I need at least a year's notice if you're going to quit. Possibly a lawsuit. We can drag this out our entire lives, actually. So you might as well just not do it.

[She stares at the small screen a second and then a smile that is nothing less than incandescent stretches her face.]

Tony.

[She'd been so scared and worried and no her eyes are not welling up with tears at how happy she is to see you. She pulls herself together.]

What do you mean, moonlighting, Mr. Stark? If I recall I'm still the CEO.

So, you're what? Just being generally interested in how well everyone else has been at employment? Interesting.

[ His coffee cup is lifted into view, Tony grinning over it. ] Ah, well that's - strange question, humour me. What's the last thing you remember of home? Like main event wise. Have I done the thing with the uh - [ He hates time lines. ] Nevermind. Just whatever you remember.

I didn't know you were here, Tony.

[She frowns at him a little.]

What do you mean the last things that I remember? I've just sent the courts a case that will ensire Justin Hammer never sees the light of day without bars ever again. You just signed on with SHIELD as a consultant and I'm still trying to get you to take back the company.

[But you keep distracting her.]

We're trying to- Wait. Does this mean you might not be from the same time as me? Before you-- Are you dying?!. You better tell me the truth right now because you promised there would be no more secrets like that!

It's not going so well. Even the waitressing jobs are thin on the ground.

[ Howard is tinkering with something when the device that he refuses to leave unattended, impressed by the advanced technology, beeps to alert him to the new feed.

He clicks it on automatically without seeming, at first, overly interested. But then he spares the screen a glance and does a double take, a somewhat seductive smirk tugging up the corners of his mouth, and suddenly exploring whatever it is that he's dismantled doesn't seem as urgent. ]

God, a guy's gotta love this city and it's endless supply of good looking dames. How about we meet up, grab a cup of joe, and discuss this in depth?

Just dates this before she talks to Tony.

[For a moment Pepper's taken aback by how much he looks like Tony, but his vocabulary ensures she takes a second look before speaking.]

Thank you for the compliment and I would love to get information from you, but I don't think my boyfriend would appreciate an 'in depth discussion'.

Well ain't that a shame? [ Eyebrows wiggling, he tries his chances. ] Hey, but what the old ball and chain don't know, right?

[She can't hardly believe the gall of this guy.]

[ Steve is still adjusting to the technology, but he manages well enough, clicking open the video connection and squinting down at the screen.

He recognises her from the picture Tony keeps hidden in his wallet, the brief and passing meeting they had a long time ago. ]

[Pepper tilts her head curiously. She's pretty sure she would remember this guy if they had met.]

I'm sorry. Do I know you?

[ Steve's used to people knowing him one minute and forgetting the next, but it makes him feel socially awkward to start again, and the connection goes quiet as he pauses for thought, rubbing nervously at the back of his neck. ]

Yeah, we - I mean, yes, ma'am, we met once. But these places are kinda - well, it's complicated. It's - oh, I'm Steve, Steve Rogers. I, uh - Tony's my - I'm a friend of Tony's.

It's nice to meet you! I'm guessing you met me somewhere else before here? Tony mentioned he's been universe hopping for a year... I came straight from home.

[Straight from finally thinking she and Tony were approaching a stable-ish relationship.]

I'm..very glad you've been taking care of him.

[How unbelievable was it that she could be eternally grateful to him and really want to hurt him at the same time?]
