I realized why I'm aggressively disinterested in a lot of ships where characters have a more natural allignment with each other or feel like "the thing to ship". There are some notable exceptions, but I was thinking about it today, and I had an epiphany about how a lot of the shipping I'm interested in has to do with character identity, growth, and compromise.
Like, I've been thinking about Bucky Barnes in the MCU, and why Steve/Bucky grates against me so much, and I realized that my approach to that problem, as a writer, is completely different. I would MUCH rather see Bucky in a relationship that's a little more toxic and unpredictable, because the kind of romantic story I'm most interested in generally is one where people find their own identities through conflict rather than synthesis. Like, even the takes I've seen on MCU!Natasha/Bucky feel too...nice?
And like, I totally understand the fantasy of the perfect healing relationship, but for me as a person and a writer it doesn't usually feel right?
Maybe it's just the environment I grew up in/my wires are crossed, but when there's no LEGIT conflict it almost never feels real to me.
