So, I was really, really on the fence about the new Marvel NOW Loki single, for a lot of reasons. I was worried about it, because it is the kind of thing and premise that could either be really good or really bad, and I also try to make a point about not fangirling about him whenever possible and instead focusing on characters that I feel need more attention.

Well, it was just announced via the writer's Tumblr today that Loki is officially bisexual and possibly bigender/genderqueer.

I'll have to check my work on this one, but I'm pretty sure that makes him either the second Silver Age Comics character to be retconned as queer. The first of course being Kate Kane. There are other characters it had been implied for by various writers - Tony Stark and Wonder Woman being at the top of the list, but there's a big different between one or two writers being able to slip in some subtext and a writer saying "Yeah this is a thing".

I won't lie. There are a lot of ways this could be fucked up. Like, really fucked up. I always get alarmed when I see a male writer trying to do something meant to appeal to women, because oftentimes the thing that appeals to women MOST is not the thing that guys think will appeal to women. They could use it to make Thorki canon. They could play it entirely for female gaze, which while that wouldn't be a bad awful terrible thing considering comics' history with women anyway, it wouldn't be the best for representation.

I'm still really skeptical, but to have something like this said is a big deal and I am thrilled about it.

loki, marvel comics, comics
