The following letter was published in its entirety in the Sunday Aug 17th edition of the Virginian-Pilot newspaper!!
My husband and I just recently moved to the City of Portsmouth. Knowing that SPSA is the refuse handler in this area, and knowing that the SPSA facility is in the City of Portsmouth, I was shocked and dismayed that I, as a homeowner, could not receive curbside recycling service in the same city as the recycling facility! I have recycled for nearly 20 years in other localities in Virginia, but I did not have curbside trash pickup and carried my recyclables myself to a refuse transfer station.
It makes no sense for the city which houses the recycling facility to not offer easy recycling solutions to its residents. I now have to burn gas to take my recyclables to a recycling center - and I wonder, am I negating what I'm trying to do by burning extra gas to recycle?
I want my blue bin, and I want to be able to do my part. Portsmouth, will you help your citizens be better stewards of the earth??
