"it was twenty years ago today...."
November 13, 1987. The night that I became a Brother of Alpha Phi Omega, through the Zeta Beta chapter at Va Tech. The ceremony was held in the War Memorial Chapel, and I remember calling an old friend of mine who didn't even know I was pledging when it was all over with - Keith Roots. Kay Murray (now Logan) and Chuck Gary were my Big Bro's, and I remember being so proud when they presented me with my jersey and a plastic mug with the letters on it. Oddly enough, I almost didn't make it. I pledged in my junior year, after having come out to rush while a freshman - but was too apprehensive about the time commitment to pledge then. Only after breaking up w/ a boyfriend and looking to do something different. Some Brothers didn't like my honesty, and I nearly was voted out at MidQuarters - because I would never be a good Brother, nor have anything positive to offer the Fraternity.
Yes, 20 years later, that still rings in my ears. Maybe that's part of the reason I work so hard for APO, to continually prove that I am worthy of the honor of Brotherhood. Maybe it's just because I found my home in APO. I surely didn't know that night what an impact APO would have on me, nor the friends that I would make and keep for many years through APO.
"So may I introduce to you The act you've known for all these years..."
ME!
