During my drive to the park-and-ride this morning, NPR was interviewing a author with a recently published book. The book is Slackonomics
(link to Amazon). I am not endorsing it; I haven't read it and probably won't. However, I thought the author's premise was amusing and wanted to share.
Basically she said that Generation X has had a bumpy ride. Grew up in the 80s when everyone was going to be rich, then went through the 80s recession crash. Had the crazy dot-com bubble in the late 90s, followed by another crash. She didn't mention the housing bubble on air, but I bet it gets a mention in the book too. She theorizes that Gen X doesn't complain much about the forecast problems with Social Security because we're pretty sure we won't be getting it, based on past experiences. Her opinion is that we're basically used to the uncertainty by now, LOL.
Forget Generation X, she says; call us Generation Whiplash.
Devil's advocate: I'm not fond of the tendency to group people into a "generation" and assign assumed characteristics. ... Yet I am still amused.
