[Kh2] - Apathy (Axel/Roxas)

Notes: Not my best, but it wasn't supposed to be. Just a little slice of life that I felt like writing. Also maybe an explanation for part of Roxas' costume.

“Do you enjoy killing people?”
The question took Axel by surprise. It was rare that Roxas spoke to him at all. Roxas actually initiating a conversation had only happened once or twice before and it had always been some sort of argument.
“Uh… No, of course not. Why do you ask?”
Roxas looked at him for a long moment and turned away again to continue polishing Oblivion.
“I think you’re lying.”
“Why would you think that?”
“You like killing people, don’t you?”
Axel stared at Roxas for a moment, lit a new cigarette with the remains of the one between his fingers and took a long drag.
“Why do you ask?” He repeated.
“You used to be a soldier, right?” Axel blinked at Roxas with surprise - he was sure that he had never told Roxas about his past life before. “I find it hard to believe that after all those battles, you don’t like killing people at least a little bit. You’re too good at it not to enjoy it at least a little.”
Axel laughed a humorless laugh.
“Guess you caught me. I wouldn’t say I enjoy it, but I… guess I just don’t care either way anymore.”
“You’re still lying.” Roxas stood up and looked down at Axel. Apathy made his eyes dull and his voice flat. The fact that Roxas didn’t even pretend to feel anything around him made Axel wish that he could feel anger. He wanted to be able to justify throwing Roxas to the ground and cutting a smile into his face.
“I wouldn’t lie to you.”
“Of course you would. Lying is what you do.”
“It’s more than you do,” muttered Axel. The kid was so infuriating that even fucking him was beginning to sound unappealing.
To Axel’s surprise, he looked over and found that there was a smile on Roxas’ face. It was little and not a true smile, but it wasn’t the typical apathetic pout that Roxas usually wore.
“What is it?” Axel couldn’t help but ask.
“I just realized something.”
“You’d kill me too if I got in your way.”
Axel seized Roxas’ wrist and roughly pulled him close.
“You listen to me,” Axel spoke slowly and through clenched teeth. Something in his eyes crackled menacingly, like embers ready to be fanned into a flame. Roxas stared at that light as Axel held him close. “And you listen good, Roxas. I’d kill everyone else in the world before I hurt you. I’d burn them to their bone marrow. Do you understand?”
“Burn them to their bone marrow?” Roxas tried to pull his wrist out of Axel’s grip, but Axel only held him tighter.
“Yes. I’d burn them until there was nothing left.”
“Sort of like you’re doing to me?” Roxas tried to pull his wrist away again.
“What?”
Axel looked down and saw that his hand was burning Roxas’ bare wrist. A ring of scalded flesh encircled the blonde’s wrist, looking swollen and painful. Axel jerked his hand away, terribly startled.
“What the fuck?! How did that happen?! Hang on, I’ll go get you a bandage and a Potion from the medical wing… We’ll have to get you a wristband or something to hide the scar…”
“At this rate, you really are gonna kill me.” Roxas looked up at Axel with that empty smile still on his lips. “Maybe one day I’ll get to return the favor.”
