The two men stood on opposite corners of the room, watching each other as closely as they possibly could. The space between them was not far and yet something precious had been lost in that short space… Although they were two bodies, they breathed as one, their breath hot on each other’s lips.
“We can’t,” said the one in black. His coat enveloped him like a shadow, swathing everything from throat to foot in seamless black. “We can’t, Xehanort. It would be folly.”
“But I want you,” the other clenched his fists and paced, pounding his agitation into the stone floor. He picked up his head and looked at the Nobody across the room with clear desperation in his eyes. “I want to be with you… whole… Like we should be.”
Xemnas took a step towards the Heartless and stopped.
“You know I want nothing more,” he started.
“Then don’t deny this, Xemnas!” Xehanort shouted. “We’re broken! We will never be whole this way! We are cursed to never be as we once were unless you take a chance with me!” The outline of his body seemed to writhe like flame or darkness, his agony and rage apparent in his every motion. “You can’t leave us like this!” The Heartless stopped and stared at his Nobody with longing on his face. “You can’t want us to be like this… Broken… And you can’t even feel…”
The calm expression remained on Xemnas’ face. He couldn’t even fake a smile or a frown, not even for his brother.
“Xehanort… You know I want this… I want you… more than anything,” he said quietly. “But we don’t know what will happen. One of us or even both of us could disappear into nothing forever. Do you want to be lost?”
The Heartless stopped pacing and stared at the Nobody.
“No… and I don’t want to lose you either.”
“Then we can’t touch,” Xemnas said softly. “Not yet.”
Xehanort moaned softly. It was too hard… they were so close… so very close and yet so far away. There was not even a dull ache in his chest where his heart should have been. He grasped at his chest desperately.
“I can’t stand it… I don’t care if I’m lost…”
Xemnas walked forward quickly and stopped just short of touching his brother. He wanted to, oh so badly… but something held him back.
“Xehanort… brother…” his voice was soft, full of the desperation that he could not actually feel. He relied on Xehanort to feel for him… just as Xehanort relied on him to be rational. They could not function alone. “Get up…”
The Heartless man rose slowly at Xemnas’ behest. He and his brother were standing less than an arm’s length away now… the proximity and the temptation were dangerous.
“Xemnas…” Xehanort reached out and took his brother’s hand. They both wore gloves for this reason, but even so, their flesh burned where it almost touched. Their eyes met and locked. The heat spread through their bodies until they both felt engulfed in the same flame.
Only when he felt pieces of himself begin to fade away did Xehanort release his brothers’ hand and step back. Xemnas looked deeply into his Heartless’s eyes, needing, wanting, craving.
“Soon,” he promised, his voice a dry and cracked whisper. “Soon, we’ll be one again…”
