[Halloween Fics] - TWENTY-THREE

Oct 26, 2007 01:00

All was dark in The World That Never Was.  All of the neon lights that had previously illuminated the stillborn city had all long been extinguished.  The world that had never been alive to begin with was now utterly dead.

Or was it?

Hoards of Shadows and Neo-Shadows roiled in the empty streets, their half-moon eyes casting the only light in the world.  The movement of their midnight bodies on the asphalt made the streets themselves appear to be boiling.

But despite this, the Shadows themselves were not alive.  They were just fragments, shells dictated by an all-consuming instinct.  They did not think.  They did not feel.  They did nothing but covet.

But there was something alive in The World That Never was… a being mostly dead that had never been born, just like the world it inhabited.  This being crawled out of an alley now, each movement, each ragged breath agony on his broken body.

It isn’t fair…

The Riku Replica dragged himself into the Heartless-infested street by his fingertips and collapsed there.

“It isn’t fair…”  His voice was a hoarse rasp, broken just like the rest of him.  He pushed himself up to his feet, the rags of his clothing and armor practically dripping off his mangled body.

“What they did to me…. They made me and threw me away!”  The Replica howled despondently to the broken moon above.  The Heartless turned towards the noise as one and stared unblinkingly at him.  They were just remnants… the left-behind parts of something else.  Like him.

Replica’s eyes widened suddenly.  Maybe there were others…  Other revenants like him.  Other beings who had been created and cast aside…  There had to be.  New resolve flooded through the replica.  He would find them, his forgotten brethren…  Together they could take back everything that was stolen from them.  Their fate was too cruel to suffer, even for revenants.
