“Fuckin’ junkies… They’re everywhere these days.”
Sora looked around at the busy intersection as he and Riku waited for the light to change. Men and women, emaciated with hollow faces and glazed eyes, drifted along the sidewalks, some glaring fiercely at the passerby, but some just ignoring them.
“There are a lot of them. What is it that they’re hooked on? I always forget.”
Riku curled his lip distastefully. “Some of ‘em are hooked on this stuff called Kingdom Hearts. Hell if I know what it is, but it’s really bad. You basically turn into a whole different person and you just sort of… stop caring about everything. You become a shell, which is why they call them Nobodies.” Riku paused and shook his head to clear it. “Anyways, stay away from the ones with the yellow eyes. They’re hooked on Hearts and they’ll attack anyone that comes near them. It screws with your inhibitions and emotions and makes you angry and violent as hell.”
As they spoke, a dark-skinned man with silver hair and bright orange eyes bared his teeth at a man who passed him. He darted out and slammed the man against the wall, clawing at him with long black fingernails.
“I need Heartssss…” he hissed. “Give them to me! I smell them on you!”
“Get off of me, you fucking Heartless!” The man attempted to kick him off, but the addict threw him down and clawed again at his chest, ripping through clothes until he drew blood.
“GIVE ME YOUR HEARTS!”
The Heartless’ shriek was horrible. By now, other Heartless and Nobodies were beginning to draw around, made curious by the noise. Other civilians were starting to stop and stare as well. The man on the ground was helpless against the Heartless’ uncontrollable wrath and with the other junkies closing in, he didn’t stand a chance.
“C’mon, we gotta go help him!” Sora pulled at Riku. “They’re gonna kill him!”
“Sora, wait. The guy’s done for already. Look.” Riku grabbed Sora’s arm and pointed.
True enough, the junkies had already engulfed the hapless man, ripping through his clothes for what they craved. A few of them had already brought out needles, clearly intending to use them on themselves and on their newest victim.
“That’s how the addiction spreads…” Riku said quietly. “They get all their victims hooked on it as well. If they had their way, the whole world would be addicted.”
“That’s horrible.” Sora shook his head, then turned and looked at Riku. “If you had to be one… a Heartless or a Nobody, which would you want to be?”
“A Heartless,” Riku said immediately. “Having evil emotions and feelings is better than nothing.”
“I’d rather be a Nobody. I’d rather feel nothing than just anger and hate.”
The two friends met eyes for a long minute, then broke away and continued to walk forward. This was one thing that they would never agree on.
