“Never forget, my prince, that you wield all of the powers of darkness. Your abilities are limitless. There is no reason for you ever to be unhappy.”
With those words, Maleficent drifted from the room, leaving the Dark Prince alone with his thoughts. Maleficent had always been there, whispering in his ear ever since he could remember. Most times he ignored her whispers, but this time she had a point…
“I couldn’t make him stay with me, but that doesn’t mean I can’t have him.”
Riku summoned the darkness to him and made it condense itself before his eyes. He touched it lightly with his fingertips, sculpting it as one would clay. His eyes were distant, looking at something that was far, far away.
“His face… he’s always smiling. And his hair was spiky like this…”
Before long, the living shadow had assumed the shape of a young man under its master’s hands. Lean and utterly black, it stood quietly as wisps of blackness drifted off around the edges of its body. It was almost human.
But not yet alive. The darkness itself gave it life, but did not have a consciousness, a mind. Riku ran his fingers through the shadow-hair and pulled it forward so that their bodies were pressed together. The shadow was cool and almost damp against his skin. Although Riku had been around the darkness his entire life, it took effort not to shiver.
“Open your eyes.”
Two bright green orbs suddenly blazed out of the shadow’s face as though they hadn’t been there before and Riku had ordered them into existence.
Riku stared into them, transfixed. He’d loved Sora’s eyes and how they were just like the ocean, but even those paled in comparison to the shadow’s eyes. They were the light of every moon and star pooled into two glowing discs within a shadowy form. The anti-boy stared back into its prince’s eyes and smiled.
“You can smile… that’s good. What else can you do? If I tell you to laugh, can you laugh?”
The shadow opened its mouth, but no sound came out. It clawed at its throat and turned its eyes back up to Riku.
“You can’t laugh…” Riku caressed the shadow’s face absently. “Can you cry?”
It was still for a long moment, then, slowly, bright green tears trickled from the anti’s eyes and fell down the pitch-black face, leaving faint green trails in their wake.
Before he really realized what he was doing, the Dark Prince licked up one of the tears. It burned his throat as he swallowed and he realized that it tasted like heat and death and, unless he was imagining things, like Sora.
