Disclaimer:  This sort of thing is why I shouldn't write when I'm tired and it's late.  This is probably pretty disjointed and I'm not sure how coherent the whole thing is, considering that it's 4 AM.  *sigh*  Written mostly 'cause I was lonely and needed something angsty to chew on.

Even with his hands bound, Axel managed to work a cigarette out of his coat pocket and get it to his cracked and dry lips.  It wasn’t an easy task, but Axel didn’t have much left aside from time and willpower.  He sucked on the cigarette and leaned back, pressing into the back of the other prisoner whom he was tied to.

“Hey Riku, gotta light?”

The joking tone didn’t do anything to break Riku’s angry silence.  He hadn’t said a word since the two of them had been thrown in this cell together and none of Axel’s efforts had done any good.

Axel continued to suck on his cigarette and lean against the warm, angry body at his back.  He had been caught, branded a traitor and thrown in here by the rest of the Organization.  Axel had known that it was bound to happen eventually, so he wasn’t all that surprised.  However, finding Riku here had been something of a shock.  He had tried to talk to Riku and find out how he had been caught, but Riku had stayed resolutely silent.  Axel wondered privately what had happened to him.

But even more than that, Axel wondered about Roxas.  Where was he?  What was he doing now?  He hadn’t gotten to see Roxas again before he had been caught, so he was very anxious.  None of the other Organization XIII members had even mentioned Roxas as they had forced him into this dungeon.

Behind him, Riku shifted his weight so that his shoulders rubbed against Axel’s.  Axel suddenly wondered if Riku was thinking about Sora and missing him the way that Axel was missing Roxas.  It was possible, even likely.  What Axel missed most about Roxas were the little things…  The way he used to say Axel’s name, the little line between his eyebrows when he frowned, the way he always closed his eyes so tight when he was asleep.

“Hey Riku.  Tell me about Sora.”

There was a long silence from the other prisoner.

“What?”

“Yeah, tell me about Sora.”  Axel nudged back against Riku.  “C’mon, it’s not like we’ve got anything better to do.”

“You’ve seen him before.  He’s got brown hair, blue eyes and a stupid smile,” Riku said shortly.  He didn’t understand why Axel was asking about Sora.  It made him extremely uncomfortable.

“No, not that sort of stuff.  I know what he looks like, stupid.”  Axel held the cigarette between his lips and turned his head.  He could see Riku’s silver hair out of the corner of his eye.  “I mean the little things.  Like how he smells and the way he laughs and what it feels like when he touches you.”

Riku was silent again for a long time, twisting his wrists in the chains.

“Why do you want to know?”

Axel sighed.  “Look, I’m just tryin’ to pass time.  And I’m curious, so sue me.”

“You go first.  Tell me about Roxas.”

Axel shifted his weight and rubbed his chin against his shoulder.

“He smells like rain.  I get a whiff of it whenever he walks into a room.  Sometimes I just want to walk in and out of a room where he is just so I can smell it.  And I like the way he frowns.  Every time I see him frown, I want to push him into a wall and tickle him and kiss him until he smiles again.”  Axel paused.  “But I hate him too.  Sometimes I just want to tie him up and hit him until he says he loves me.  I know that technically he can’t love me.  Just like I can’t love him.  But what does it matter?  I’m stuck in here anyways.”

Riku listened to Axel, then leaned his head back so that it was almost resting against Axel’s.

“Sora’s hands are always rough and they have a lot of callous, so they feel like the sand at the beach.  His hair looks different every morning ‘cause he always sleeps on it wrong.”  Riku grinned at the memory.  “He snores.  And he eats like a pig.  He steals food when he thinks he can get away from it, especially sweets.  But if you give him any reason to worry about you, he won’t leave you alone until he’s gotten you to talk.”  A grim smile spread itself across Riku’s blindfolded face.  “I miss him so much that it hurts.  I want him to tackle me like he used to do.  I want to be able to just… let go of myself and go find him.  I hate myself for not being able to.”

“Would you ever consider a substitute?”

Axel’s question was so unexpected that Riku was stunned into silence.  He tried to look over his shoulder at Axel, but he couldn’t.

“I mean if something happened to Sora,” Axel continued.

Riku turned his face away.  “You’re saying he’s dead.”  His voice was heavy and flat.

“You catch on quick.  I’m sorry.”

“No, you aren’t.”

“No, I’m not.”  Axel answered truthfully.  “I’m not capable of it.  But if I had a heart, I would be.”

“You killed him.”  It wasn’t a question.

“Yeah.”  It wasn’t a boast.

Riku stopped twisting his wrists against the chains.

“Don’t bother apologizing.  I killed Roxas.”

Axel sighed around his cigarette.  “Yeah, I had a feeling.  So what do you say?  Wanna hook up?”

“We’ll kill each other.”

“That’s the general idea.  We got nothin’ left to live for either way.  Let’s just do each other a favor and take care of it.”

“We’ll wait until someone comes in to check and then rush ‘em.  They should have weapons we can use.”  Riku crossed his legs.

“Sounds about right.  I’ll stab you, you stab me, we all go home.”  Axel clenched his cigarette in his lips as he grinned.  “Hey Riku, gotta light?”

Naturally, Riku didn’t answer.  The two of them sat in silence, quietly waiting for their time.
