Tatsuya’s eyes opened big, thoroughly packed with surprise.

Was this his punishment?

Because if it was then it was far worst that he’d imagined.

Frozen steady, he just stood there watching Koyama watching him with a seriousness Tatsuya had never before witnessed - though that much, he did expect - that, along with fuming anger and though he couldn’t imagine it, he wouldn’t have been surprised if Koyama had started to toss things around - plainly put, by his calculation, Tatsuya had imagined that by then, the apartment would’ve been loud with Koyama shelling his hate and disgust at him-

So then, why was he standing there across from Tatsuya perfectly composed and saying complicated and unnecessary things?

Why was Koyama suddenly being stubborn, unreasonable and annoying?

Tatsuya fretted about on his feet, his eyebrows knitted, trying hard to unriddle the man he’d known for over two years.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” he finally asked, feeling warm from the rage slowly building in him, rage about Koyama’s sudden character twist and rage at himself mostly - for being angry because deep down, he knew Koyama was the true and only victim.

“Oh, you heard me”, Koyama took a step closer, “Why should I let you go?” he asked, taking Tatsuya by the shoulders, “After all I’ve invested, why should I let you leave me? Um? Why should I lose to a man you haven’t seen in years? What does this Junno have that I didn’t try to give you? Why should he take you and all the love I gave you? Um? Why should I sit tight and watch him take you and everything away? Exactly, why should he be the only one happy when he and I both love you and want the same thing?”

And right then, Tatsuya felt a pinch in his chest - a pain that told him his very heart was breaking from guilt- it felt as though his own conscience was weaving a curse on him, punishing him for breaking Koyama’s own.

But a promise was a promise and he’d promised Junno all himself and all his love which meant, that all came with his entire heart and so, he stood his grounds and simply replied, “Because I love him”.

And Koyama was even more at a loss, “But you love me too, don’t you?”

“I do”, Tatsuya replied, no hesitation and not even trying to break free from Koyama’s hold on his shoulder as he said, “But I love him a whole lot more”.

But at the same time, his heart sunk seeing the way Koyama staggered in defeat, “But I gave you everything, Ueda”, he said, his voice low, holding his head in disbelief, “I gave you everything to make you happy so tell me for the last time, what do you love about him that I don't have?”

And Tatsuya pondered, leaning against the wall to support his crushing limbs - crushing from the weight of his spiralling emotions - guilt really had a cruel way of dealing with him. “He makes me laugh for no reason”.

Koyama looked at him with full eyes that also bore curiosity, “And I don’t let you?”

So Tatsuya retraced his words, “I don’t mean it like that… I just mean-", he paused because really, there was only one way to interpret his feelings. Whenever around Junno, he felt as though there were no eggshells, they didn't even need words. They annoyed each other but at the same time, they had the luxury to remain complacent in knowing that eventually and soon, they’d adapt to each other’s pace- it’s like, in a way they could be selfish with each other without guilt- put it this way, if there’s a beach, two coconut trees and a hammock, they would both comfortably fit themselves in the hammock while the waves wreaked havoc below them and Junno would make him laugh about it - make him see the positive side of being trapped in a hammock - that is, they’re together and Junno liked that.

Tatsuya inhaled and held Koyama’s face, “Kei, you’re a gem. You’ve sat through my tantrums, understood my moodiness, accepted my detachment, you’ve fed me and made me laugh and now when you should be hitting the shit out of me, you’re telling me to stay…”

“And yet you’re leaving me”, Koyama shook his head.

Tatsuya nodded. “Yes, because as hypocritical as this sounds, you deserve better than me”. And when Koyama didn’t react, Tatsuya added, “I’m sorry”, with a tiny smile.

“Don’t apologise. It’s not like you planned it, right?” Koyama told him, searching Tatsuya’s eyes and when Tatsuya looked away he asked, “Or did you?”

“Of course I didn’t plan on meeting him again”, he answered, and his reply was genuine, “But I did think it would be nice”.

Koyama raised an eyebrow in disbelief.  “You really held those feelings even while with me these two years…”

And Tatsuya knew where this was going but since they were being honest with each other, then might as well he came clean- after all, he’d put Koyama through something unforgiving.

He nodded.

And Koyama only shook his head, “And just like that, you added salt to my wound”.

“I’m truly sorry, Kei”, Tatsuya inhaled, unable to keep their gaze. This quiet chat, the quiet human discussion, this civil try at understanding each other was the hardest punishment Tatsuya would have to live with because, he then understood how he’d wasted Koyama's time and with all that guilt getting life and pulsing inside him, he knew he never deserved Koyama in the first place and now suddenly, he then started to fret that perhaps, he didn’t deserve Junno either.

“Shige will come by and collect my things”.

Tatsuya nodded. “Or I can give you the spare key and you can come when I’m not here- if that makes things easier”.

And Koyama shook his head with a bitter smile staining his lips. “You really are cruel, Tatsuya Ueda”, he said, “It’s only now that I’m leaving that you’re willfully letting me in”.

Right then, once again- the pinch in Tatsuya’s heart felt like a full grab. The guilt in him had solidified.

Day five ended.

And so when day six passed and day seven was almost over, Koki knocked on Junno’s door, “You look like a wet pussycat”.

Junno looked up with bulky eyes, “If you’re saying I look pathetic, then yes, I do feel pathetic”.

“I wouldn’t say pathetic but you look like someone crushed your pet beetle”.

Junno bunched his forehead, “Did that happen to you?”

“Yeah”, Koki drew a chair and took a seat. “I accidentally killed my brother’s squirrel”.

Junno sat back in his seat, his face drawn in full curiosity, “How?”

“I fed it bread”.

Junno, against the heaviness in his heart, somehow managed a tiny laugh, “But still, the pay off between a beetle and a squirrel-, somehow, it doesn’t seem like an equal ‘an eye for an eye’ huh?”

“Well, life can be a bit unfair”, Koki replied, “Besides, their suffering was equal so I guess in a way that’s fairness”.

Junno hummed in thought - his mind off somewhere, deep in wonder. “I think Tatsuya ran away”.

Koki yelped in his worry, “What do you mean? Why would he run away?”

“Well, it’s either that or he changed his mind about me”, Junno told him. “That night when I dropped by his apartment, I think the guy waiting was his boyfriend”.

“Oh-”Koki hummed, “And?”

“And I left. What else did you expect me to do?”

“Well, I suppose that’s true”, Koki mused, “So you think they talked about you and about them breaking up over you?”

“He definitely looked at me weird”.

“Well, anyone would if their significant other showed up half drunk with another man at his apartment”.

Junno nodded in agreement. “Though, it’s all your fault”.

Koki blanched, “All I did was try to give you two some much needed alone time”, he defended, “I take no responsibility if you two couldn’t take your hands and eyes off each other”, he continued, taking full offense, “I saw you with my own eyes - you’re both so packed with impatience… it’s like wild and steamy virgin sex but with the eyes”.

Junno inhaled then sighed, “It’s just that on top of really missing him, I now fear he’s left me without even giving me a chance”.

It was then that Koki took out his phone and dialed a number.

“Who are you calling?” Junno asked.

“Hey Kazuya”, Koki greeted as soon as Kame picked up, “You wouldn’t happen to see a runaway bride, would you?”

Kame breathed heavily into the phone, “What are you talking about?”

“Or maybe he’s more of a runaway groom. He goes by the name Tatsuya Ueda and I heard he has really sexy abs”.

“Stop meddling and let’s meet up for drinks later. I’ll text you”, Kame replied, hanging up before Koki could say another word.

“Well, you heard him”, Koki turned to Junno and said - the phone was on speaker. “So in other words, the good news is, he didn’t run away. The bad news though - which is obvious - is that he’s definitely hiding from you”.

Junno sighed and proceeded to swing around and round in circles with his office chair.
