<><><><><><><><><><>

At the start of the New Year, everyone’s jawlines dropped when they found a wedding invitation bundled in with their nengajo card.

Tatsuya was getting married.

But to who? - was everyone’s question.

Then the wedding day came in early February.

The cathedral, tiny on a hill; smelled of freshly cut flowers and was nearly full of people - everyone anxiously ready with cameras as if they expected the bride to run.

The bride was standing at the altar, dressed in pretty white from head to toe, lips peachy and eyes bold behind the laced veil. And as if anxiously waiting for a moment too, the bride’s arms clad in silk gloves were shakily wrapped around the groom’s elbow.

The minister told the guests to, “speak now or forever shut up”.

Everyone stared in the direction of the altar, still expecting the bride to run.

But the bride stayed.

They exchanged rings.

And soon, it would be time to exchange vows.

The whole cathedral held their breath;

For the bride would most definitely run.

And as if on the count of three, the cathedral door flew open and a man with long legs and a handsome face shouted, “Uepi, the horse is waiting”.

The whole church gasped.

Cameras flashed.

Video recorders captured it all.

The bride running away with a bouquet of white peony in hand shouting, “Junno, you idiot”.

“Sorry I got pulled over”.

“On a horse?!”

“I was speeding. Hurry. Get on”.

It was like a movie - the way the veil fell off the bride’s head and floated in the wind that passed through the opened cathedral door. And how the force of the breeze sent flower petals scattering about the cathedral, prettying them - prettying everything.

“How far did you get?”

“Vows”.

“What?! You told him you loved him?”

“Of course not!”.

“Then what did you say?”

“Nothing. You came right on time”.

“I don’t believe it. My Uepi was about to marry another man”.

“No, I wasn’t”.

“Yes, you were”.

“No. I wasn’t. I knew you would come”.

“You liar”.

“I’m not. I knew you would come”.

“What made you so sure?”

“Because you love me”.

“Shit. You win”.

“I kissed him, though”.

“You what?!”

“Well, how else was I supposed to hold off things?”

“I don’t know… how about saying your water broke?”

What--- what a man to insanely love and run off with?

“I don’t know, Junno. Should I rethink eloping with you?”

“No way in hell. Do you know all the trouble I went through to get this horse?”

“Now that you mention it, why are we escaping on a horse?”

“Because I’m your prince in shining armour, of course”.

“Right. Except that you’re not wearing any armour”.

“You know, for someone wearing such a lavish wedding dress and looking pretty at that, you sure are unromantic”.

“Bite me”.

“Don’t worry, Sweetpea. Starting today, you’ll get all flavours and bite sizes”.

Looking around, Tatsuya asked, “do you think they’ll come after me?”

“They won’t dare”.

“How can you be sure?”

“Because..."

"Because, what?"

"Because, reasons".

“O---h oh my god, Junno... do I even want to know?”

“Hmmm--- maybe not”.

Tatsuya sighed, having decided it best to let that conversation go as they rode towards the setting sun.

Besides;

By then, they'd long left the church - the church on the hill that was watching them gallop through cars of traffic in the buzzing downtown.

The wind on Tatsuya's face assured him that they really had no need to worry.

After all;

Everyone already knew the bride would run.
