When Junno returns home, there’s a faint, lingering scent of his lover everywhere. He loosens his necktie, inhales deeply and heads towards the bedroom - his heart heavy from a full day’s work, suddenly starts to lighten and gently flutter in excitement to see the man he loves.
“Uepi, I’m home”.
But, the room is empty and so his call falls silent.
He checks the time, breathes in again and follows the scent that’s now tickling his nose, removing his shirt and then his pants as he makes his way to the bathroom.
“Uepi, I’m home”.
It's then, scented cinnamon and grapefruit bubbles float in the air from the tub, reaching him all the way at the door. The room is tiny, and with the steam lifting from the tub, it’s misty like a sauna inside. Junno could hardly see the man he’s looking for, who's nicely relaxing in the soap.
“Are you getting in?” Tatsuya asks, reaching his hands out to guide Junno to him.
Junno takes Tatsuya’s hand, “Uepi, I’m home”.
Tatsuya laughs, “I heard you the first two times”.
Fully bare and ready, Junno slips himself in the tub behind Tatsuya, “so what do you say?”
Readjusting to the tight fit of the tub to accommodate Junno’s long limbs and recently broad shoulders, Tatsuya asks, “how long have we been living together?”
Junno hums in thought, “two--- almost three years. Why?”
“Then why do you still behave like we’re a newlywed couple?”
Junno laughs while embracing him, his arms warm and smooth and slippery from the bubble bath, but his tongue hauls cool against Tatsuya’s neck, his nape and the tip of his ear, “if it’s with you, then every day is a wedding day”.
Tatsuya doesn’t reply immediately. He instead leans back and presses a kiss to Junno’s lips and stays long enough to nibble on Junno’s tongue, and at last says, “welcome home, sweetpea”.
Junno squeezes him tight in a hug and with a smile he replies, “happy to be home”
“How was your day?” Tatsuya asks.
“Tiring. But dancing is always fun and I meet interesting people every day so I’ve no complaints”.
“So you’re happy, then”, Tatsuya says, sounding somewhat absentminded.
Junno nonetheless replies, “I am happy”.
Work is still a bittersweet topic for them.
Tatsuya makes a contemplative pause, “I’m still trying to get used to you not being in the group”, he says and it’s no question. Perhaps he doesn’t even need a response.
Junno swallows, taking his time to answer, “I know the feeling - at times I feel a little lonely. But then I think about how things are finally working out and getting better with me joining the Dance Theatre Company and you getting to do your MousePeace solo, and the other members got to also grow individually and you’re now back together--- But most importantly, when I’m lonely, I think about you - I think how lucky I am to be living with you - seeing you every day - I can do what I want and still be with you - I can always be with you”.
Tatsuya suddenly jerks a bit when Junno’s fingers run slippery across his belly and betwixt his abs, fondly tracing him. The sensation is so sweet that Tatsuya has his toes curling even as he says, “you’re always the Mr. Positive”.
Junno laughs, “what’s there not to be positive about?”, he rhetorically asks, “I have you and you certainly own me. I have you and that's almost everything I need”.
Tatsuya titters, a low sort of chuckle, “ever since you joined the Theatre, you’ve been talking like a romantic”.
Junno laughs and kisses Tatsuya shoulder, “well, we’ve been doing a lot of Shakespeare and Robert Burns recitals - my love is like a red, red rose that’s newly sprung in June -“
And it’s then Tatsuya starts to laugh so hard, splashing water on the floor - a pretty sound that bounces against the walls of the small room and echoes in joy, “you’re so lame”.
But Junno is laughing too - such comfort - spending an evening in the bathtub with the man he loves, spewing embarrassing love poems - it’s the kind of ‘simple’ Junno has always wished for.
“Then fairest, Sir”, Tatsuya starts, mimicking, teasing Junno, “what shall we have for dinner?”
While cackling at their silliness, they come out the soak, surprised by the amount of wrinkles in their fingers and toes, “then shall we dine at home or would you prefer someplace fancy?” Junno continues.
They’re dripping wet, the mist drifting from the bathroom and into the narrow passageway when they open the door, “I shall be glad to prepare two instant cup noodles”, Tatsuya replies while they dry each other, “I believe we have some seafood - or would you care for the spicy Thai cuisine, instead?”
Junno laughs out loud, “quit making fun of my profession”, and then adds, “but I’ll take the Thai flavour, thank you”.
And as the night wanes, the two men comfortably finish their cup noodles and two cans of beer - dinner is served. Not long after primetime TV, Tatsuya is fast asleep, his head in Junno’s lap. When Junno notices, he bends over and lightly blows into Tatsuya’s ear. Tatsuya stirs and Junno tells him, “let’s go to bed”.
Tatsuya groans, then mumbles, “carry me”, his arms already wrapping around Junno’s neck.
Junno laughs to himself. After so many years, there isn’t much he isn’t used to - but still, it wasn’t always easy - the two of them.
While carrying Tatsuya to the bedroom, Junno reminisces on the past few years. After leaving the band, the last 2 years were a sort of trial --- the start of a new career for him, the band taking a temporary break - both of which caused Tatsuya to have constantly flipped between being mad at him and supporting him--- that period scared him. The thought scared him that the man he loves would perhaps come to hate him. And for that not to happen, to make sure that never happened, Junno has been working hard to become a man who can support the person he loves - a man who would make his man proud - a man who could support Tatsuya, and make up for all the problems he caused.
And as the clock is just about to tick into another day, he turns off the light, scoots over and hugs the man he owes so much. Years have passed but it’s really true - every day with Tatsuya feels like a wedding day.
And so tomorrow too, Junno looks forward to saying;
“Uepi, I’m home”.
