I keep updating this as I remember things...
So.
Terrible, terrible venue. We got there pretty early and waited around a few hours surrounded by annoying people (they guys behind us weren't bad, the guy had a beard, but I think we freaked them out because they left for like an hour and a half to have sushi). I called
kurtbert at one point (or, rather, I left her a message and she called back), which was an odd experience as I'd never talked to anyone I knew just online before. I hope we didn't scare you, Holly! Anyway. The security people kept moving people who had waited around which was a bitch and then they kept only letting us go so far and then stopping and it was extremely stressful and I don't know why. We were really antsy. It was the feeling of "oh God, something is terrible is going to happen and I'm going to die but I have no idea why/how." It was weird. But then we got in and we were right in front against the barricade. We were pretty much right in front of Ryan and then right in front of Nick but had a good view of the whole stage.
The Cribs came on and were pretty awesome, but nobody seemed into it and the sound was shit. Gary had like a neon orange guitar, it was sweet, and Ryan's wound was clearly visible when he turned around. Ross was overall hardcore and kept standing on his drum kit, and then at the end Gary came over and replaced him during the song right before they went off. The sound was shit and nobody seemed into it. People do not need to vocally address their not enjoy a show, though, it's annoying. This came up several times. But yeah, they would have been pretty amazing in a smaller venue with people who actually liked them. It was sad, when Ryan talked, he was like "so, you probably don't know who we are and can't understand me, so we're just going to play some music." Awws! They were just overall adorable.
Then nobody seemed to know who was playing first. The girl roadie from before came out and we were pretty convinced it would be Franz, but there was some skepticism. The drum kit was not Paul's sparkley gold one that said Domino from before (it was a glittery silver one, which reminds me that The Cribs also had a sweet glittery silver kit). Eventually, though, it was clear it was Franz.
Then they gave tried to give us a fucking seizure with huge ass strobe lights when they came on. It was terrible and not really very awesome from up close. I did make out Andy who was like "SWEET, STOBE LIGHTS" and dancing around a bit. They opened with This Boy and were overall fantastic, but it was pretty much the same set list as when they played the Roseland. They opened and closed with the same songs and only a few were different. It was a shorter set, which was a shame. They played The Fallen and Alex started off with "so we stole and drank champagne" and Sarah and I were like ???! and couldn't figure out if it was on purpose or not (they covered for it well if it was). He just sang the first part afterwards. So we got an out-of-order The Fallen! If I recall correctly, he got the lyrics wrong at the concert last time, too. That boy will never get it right. The intros were funny, but I can't really remember them. I remember was Alex describing Bob as an angel and then introducing Andy as "another blonde angel. Is it another Bob? No!" Something like that and Bob giggled. Then for Nick he said "INCREASING THE SEX APPEAL OF FRANZ FERDINAND 4000%!" and Nick grinned and was quite amused/flustered at that. It was cute; I think Alex just tries to see exactly how ridiculous he can be. Before the show Sarah had mentioned that she wanted to see Bob in the middle just once (he didn't even have to sing just be in the middle) and sort of got her wish for Eleanor. He was standing where Alex was standing, but technically both Alex and Nick were on the other side of him since Nick switched keyboards. Other highlights? Oooh, Bob at one point seemed to have an "I'm going to go over and see Nick!" epiphone and then waltzed over there sort of smiling and then made lusty eyes at him and started to shake it. Nick was kinda like "the fuck?" but then he was all smiley and amused (flustered?) and it was cute. Nick seemed to have several of those moments. It was a good show, though nothing extremely exciting to differentiate it from other ones. Alex was looking dangerously skinny, it was a bit terrifying. Those pants ought to have been really tight on him, but they were all loose. Andy's pants, on the other hand, were amazing. Those could not have been tighter jeans. I was pleased. Andy was generally LOLZ; he was really intense and excited the whole time. During Outsiders he was playing keyboards and all intense about it and then ran over to Paul all excited like "YEAH BITCHEZ, I WILL DRUM NOW, TOO, CHECK OUT MY ASS!" Awws, Andy. An enthusiastic lad. He seems to have been promoted from drum tech, though, he didn't come out until the rest of them did. Also during Walk Away, Alex said "Thomson claps Andy Knowles on the back" which was synchronized with the actual gesture (since Paul was going back to drum), which I assume they must usually do, but it was still cheesily cute enough to mention. Nick also had pretty tight jeans, for which I was thankful, but none of them rivaled The Cribs in the tight jeans department (well, except maybe Andy). Why don't I actually know anybody who can pull off ridiculously tight jeans, I ask you!
Some other details from the show... erm, the boys by me were ridiculously into it, like screaming all the words to all the songs, which annoyed me a bit, but also amused me. They kept screaming "I LOVE YOU ALEX!!!!" and "I WANT YOUR BABIES ALEX!!!!" which was kinda annoying, but at one point they got a pretty adorablely confused/amused look from Alex. I am all for the adorable looks, you see! The girls behind us were bitches. They were trying not to enjoy it and screaming "WE WANT DEATH CAB, NO MORE FRANZ!" and things of that nature. Bitches. The guy behind us was also like "THESE GUYS SUCK" during The Cribs. I didn't get pressed up against at all except kinda on the sides. It was more comfortable then last time, but the atmosphere was less fun. Especially for The Cribs. Still, the boys beside me were into it enough to make up for the people behind us.
Then after that set we left to avoid Death Cab, but were pretty much the only ones outside the venue. We wanted to try to meet them, so we went to where the vans were and felt kinda lame seeing as we were the only ones there. We talked to the security guard and when The Cribs came out, he went and asked them to come over. Gary was already out there, he was apparently meeting some guy who was waiting. Then we went over to talk to them and asked him to sign our shirts and he seemed genuinely surprised at that, which was adorable. He was like "is it one of our shirts?!" Um, yes? Chatted just a bit with him, then the security guard did us a favor for waiting and got the other boys to come out. We got Ross first, who was pretty chatty and I didn't get a chance to ask him a few of the things I wanted to, but he was very friendly. I don't think his clothes could have possibly been any tighter/tinier. He was like "so, you don't like Death Cab?" I replied kindly that I wasn't a fan, to which he responded "... well, they're nice guys." He was being nice, but seemed to approve of our leaving. I think it was Ryan who had a similar reaction. I was like "they don't really like who they're touring with!" It was cute, though. He also explained their van situation and how they didn't have a big fancy tour bus. Apparently there are seven of them in a tiny van and they were driving all the way to Sacremento, which is why they were leaving early. I was like "Aww, that kinda sucks!" We then chatted with Ryan. Sarah asked him how his back was and he showed his scar which was intense. It looked quite painful (okay, I was a bit disgusted). 30 stitches (or 15 initially, as it were). He was like "yeah, I kinda fell onto this table." He made it sound like an accident. Nobody accidently table dives on The Kaiser Chiefs' table, I am sorry. He said it was the candy dish that really cut him up. When he got to the hospital, the guys were like "you might have cut your kidney, in which case you might die" and he was terrified. Awwwww! He was glad to be okay. Since Sarah brought it up, he signed her shirt by drawing a little picture of the wound and writing "NOW WE MATCH!" and then signing with his name in a heart with a couple of Xs. That's too adorable. He was all giddy when he wrote it, too, like he was very amused at his own cleverness. He wrote "CHEERS DARLIN" on mine, which is also pretty cute. They were overall just an adorable band. At least I thought so. They seemed slightly shocked to have fans (even if it was just Sarah and I and two girls who didn't know who they were)and were thus quite polite. It was their first time in Portland (I think their first US tour?).
We waited around a bit after they left and chatted with some intense fans that frightened me just a bit, but Franz didn't come. Well, they did, but were quickly shuffled into a big white van that sped off into the night. It was a shame and apparently they came out into the venue when Death Cab was playing, which I kinda anticipated happening, but if we had met them, we wouldn't have met The Cribs so I don't really care except I'm a bit pissed at waiting the extra time. I think The Cribs appreciated it more, I mean Franz know they have a lot of fans in the US. It's a shame, though. If we had stayed in, we would have been forced to listen to Death Cab. We managed to avoid listening to them at all. Skillz.
K, so there's probably more, but I already rambled enough and you probably don't care. I'm still happy that The Cribs were so sweet, though (sweet in an adorable, polite way, though I suppose they were sweet in the YEAH HARDCORE, AWESOME kinda way, too). The concert is summed up in my mind with three mental images: Andy's tight jeans, Bob being all flirty/shaking it with Nick and Ryan's hardcore scar. Sweet.
ETA: I got one picture. It's terribly shitty, but very slightly better than the shitty grainy one I got of Alex last time. Actually no, it's not. But it proves I was there!
Hooray?
