"The youngest was the most loved, the youngest was the cherub"
I know this is a few days late, but this post pretty much sums up why my love for ontd_political has diminished a lot over the past couple of months.
Look -- for me to say that the U.S. has a ton of problems going on right now is a vast understatement. I get that my country has been -- and still is -- responsible for most of the injustices going on throughout the world today. I'm not a patriotic person at all; not only does the jingoism and not-so-subtle nationalism and racism and prejudice of it all annoy me to no end, but I find the notion of having to be proud of a nation just because you were born and/or grew up there a bit absurd. As a result, the Fourth of July is a "meh" holiday for me -- I don't care about it one way or another, despite my annoyance for all the fireworks that go off in our neighborhood. And as someone who believes Obama is way too conservative/right-wing for what this country really needs, I can understand the impulse to want to use the holiday to get in people's faces about those problems, those injustices, those things that we need to stop ignoring and start addressing in a meaningful way. I sympathize with not being able to celebrate Independence Day because of these things, and I see nothing wrong with expressing that.
But. There is a time and a place for everything. The Independence Day Party Post linked above is not that time and place.
You know the thing about most of the members of ontd_political, especially those who participate a lot? THEY ALREADY KNOW ABOUT THIS STUFF. Some of them might me more intimately familiar with this information than others, but they do know about it. And they don't need to be reminded of it in a condescending manner by people who believe (implicitly if not explicitly) that everyone who doesn't agree with them are fauxgressive capitalist pigs. Especially not in a place where you're supposed to chill out and avoid serious business. I agree with a lot of the criticism brought up by those people, and normally I think they're rather intelligent and are good people to have in a comm like that. But there being a Debbie Downer with good reason -- and then there's just being a dick. And if wanting people to be tactful and reasonable and not be dicks makes me a neoliberal apologist, then so be it. (And no, this is not the same thing as the tone argument, not one bit.)

Not much has been going on around here lately -- I worked all day yesterday, but I have rest of the week off because I won't be needed until Monday, so I'm trying to take advantage of that. ^_^; It got to be 105ºF (41ºC) here yesterday, though -- WHAT THE HELL, WEATHER? IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO GET THAT HOT. DDDDDDDDDDDDDDX And it isn't much better today, though it is supposed to cool down tomorrow. In the meantime, my mom and sister are in NYC today to see the Broadway musical The Addams Family -- I can't imagine them being all that comfortable. ._.,
