I liked Shinji and Rei a lot more in this movie too. I mean, I always liked them, but here even more so, for the reasons you described. (And yeah, now that I look on it, the Amuro comparison wasn't all that fair, for the reasons you described. It's just that he's trotted out as an example of the "BAMF," which is really weird considering he's not, but it was late at night when I was writing that and I wasn't thinking all that straight. :/ )

I didn't really see Kaji as bi-curious, more like he was just fucking with Shinji, but it was still funny :D

I completely agree, I was just being facetious. XD

An actual super robot character doesn't work without the Eva universe, and her personality seemed non-existent, basically just another excuse for GAINAX to sell merchandise of a new female character

THIS. I didn't even think of this, really. She really didn't fit at all, and you could tell because if you skipped the scenes where she was in it, it wouldn't have impacted the movie all that much. I think her attitude could be signs of mental health issues on her end, but the series needs to make this clear, like what they did for the other main characters, otherwise it falls flat. I'm hoping she gets more development in the next two movies.

I didn't notice much difference between the two styles you mentioned (old vs. new), though I did think something was off with the EVAs themselves, come to think of it. And I didn't mind Asuka's introduction scene -- I think I liked it better, actually, since I didn't get as much of an embarrassment squick watching it, but you're right, she didn't really have much of a role to play in this movie as well, which is kinda sad. It looks like she'll at least be out of her coma for the third movie, though, so at least there's that.

I imagine Kaworu will feature heavily in the next movie, which I'm really looking forward to

Same. I honestly thought he'd be more prominent in this one, considering he was in the last scene of the first movie, but I was let down by that. :( Still really good overall, though!
