I don't normally rec academic books, but I was trying hard to come up with something that wasn't Deep Economy by Bill McKibben, so I'll go with this. I admit I haven't read the whole book, but I found the essays I did read (which are all by Susan J. Napier, a professor of Japanese studies at the University of Texas, Austin) to be actually quite fascinating and not borderline BS like most media criticism tends to be. I think it's because of the subject matter (which I know many people on my f-list enjoy), how Napier manages to make her discussions relevant to important ideas and current cultural trends, and how she isn't afraid of using colloquialisms to make her work accessible. It's great to see an attempt at viewing anime as a serious cultural asset, and if you want a more intellectual look at the medium, whether you're new to anime or you've been a fan for quite a while, this is a great place to start.

I'm sure some people in the fandom have already heard (especially if you've been on 4chan lately), but apparently there's a new Transformers show coming out this fall?
Next cartoon is called "Transformers: Prime" according to actor Jeffrey CombsFrom JeffreyCombs.com:
TRANSFORMERS: PRIME
Debuting later this fall Hasbro in conjunction with Discovery Communications Inc will release a new Transformers cartoon on a new TV channel currently called Discovery Kids called Transformers: Prime.
Jeffrey Combs will be the voice of Ratchet, a very well known character in the Transformers world. There are 26 episodes scheduled for the first season. Exact details of the show are currently unavailable but will be posted here as soon as they are made available.
Jeffrey is quite thrilled with the opportunity to be cast in the role of Ratchet. He's not able to talk too much about the show this early in the production but did have this quote: "What I can say is that it is an honor and a privilege to be a part of such a prestigious project."
Jeffrey Combs is known mostly for his role in acting in the horror film genre as well as playing several alien characters in the popular Star Trek franchise. In the world of cartoons, Combs has lent his voice to Scaregrow in Batman: The Animated Series and several others. Wikipedia even notes that Combs will be playing Ratchet in Transformers: Prime.
From Wikipedia.org:
Combs will be voicing Ratchet on the new animated series, Transformers: Prime which is tentatively scheduled to begin airing in the fall of 2010 on The Hub, a new channel owned by Hasbro, Inc.
Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci ink TV dealKurtzman and Orci, who are working on a "Star Trek" sequel and the Daniel Craig starrer "Cowboys and Aliens" on the feature side, continue to serve as consulting producers on "Fringe" and are executive producers on CBS/CBS Studios' "Hawaii 5-0," which they co-wrote with Peter Lenkov, and on the "Transformers" CG-animated series for upcoming Hasbro/Discovery channel the Hub.
Next Transformers Cartoon to be called Transformers: Prime Well, this should be interesting. A CGI show produced by the writers of the live-action movies? And on a network co-owned by Hasbro? Well, at least that should provide the show with a little more longevity, considering the main reason Transformers: Animated got canceled was because of disputes between Hasbro and Cartoon Network (I think); by partly owning the channel it's running on, there shouldn't be those sorts of problems. This Jeffrey Combs guy sounds good, and I'm going to remain optimistic about this, but I still can't help but get a bad feeling about this. :/ Anyway, though this might be of interest to some people on the ol' f-list. ;-)
Anyway, I'm doing fine, even though I seem to have been coughing more over the past couple of days, and because it's my last full day at home and I still have so much to do. Woe. -_-; But we're going to the Chinese restaurant tonight, so that should help matters considerably. :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
