Midnight, and all the lights in their street are off, the houses basking in silent darkness. He closes the blinds of the window and makes his way towards the center of the room, to their bed, where Tomoe is reclining against the pillows, reading another one of her sordid books under the soft lamplight. In her bedroom, Natsumi is sound asleep.
As soon as he slips into bed, Tomoe looks up at him from beneath her lashes, setting her book down on the bedside table with a lithe, graceful motion of her hand.
The anticipation surges inside him, coiling like an electric wire that leaves a thrumming heat in its wake. Her finger hooks into the neckline of his shirt and tugs him close to her, closer, until her breath feels warm against his cheek, the corner of his mouth.
"So," She whispers against his lips.
"So," He replies, mouth feeling strangely dry.
And then she tips her head up to kiss him-
The door slams open, Natsumi standing in the doorway. The two spring apart: she darting from beneath him to allegedly look for something on the bedside table, he pressing his palms against the bed, beginning a series of pushups with a loud, exaggerated "One! Two! Three!"
Their daughter holds up her teddy bear and in a shy, quiet voice asks, "Can I sleep here tonight please?"
He opens his mouth to reply, but Tomoe beats him to it.
"Of course."
Subtly, she nudges him aside to make space for Natsumi, who crawls in between them, snuggling into the warmth of her parents.
"Good night, mommy. Good night, daddy. Good night, Tedi-chan."
She tucks her cheek against her father's upper arm and clutches at her mother's hand, her breathing slowly easing into the regular, steady rhythm of sleep.
Tomoe clicks the lamp off, bathing the room in darkness.
He stares at the ceiling, until his eyes adjust and he can make out the silhouette of the light fixtures. He shifts slightly.
"You know, we can still-"
"Good night, Eichi."
