This is not JUST an Economic Stimulous Package...

...and that is why I believe it will really work.

I recently held a House Meeting about the Economic Recovery Plan.  One of the things we talked about and specifically that I like about this Bill is that it isn't just an Economic Stimulus Package with only the short term in mind.  I had heard a valid complaint about the cost of this Bill;  I am a little conservative when it comes to Federal Government spending.  When this Bill is viewed in terms of only being an Economic Stimulus Bill compared to a proposal to say just cut taxes and maybe a tax rebate of some kind, then the cost of this Bill does seem preposterous.  Some might even argue that the Bills attention to areas such as infrastructure, education, unemployment, health care, energy/environment and provisions for areas that will not show immediate or even short term results are special agendas.  I think this however that this breadth is the strength of this plan.

This plan is perhaps misnamed.  It should be called the "Roads, Bridges, Windmills, Solar, Transportation, Energy, Unemployment, Education, Environment... Economic Plan" or maybe the "Rebuilding America Plan" for short, or something like that.  We could have a separate Bill for each of these issues that we all know need to be addressed in some way or other;  each of these areas that the President promised to address when he was campaigning, when he was elected, when he was sworn in and now is showing that he is serious about now.  If we did propose separate Bills to address each of these over time I suspect that in the end it would not only have a higher price tag when you add them all together, but it would be more costly in other ways. He is recognizing that these areas affect each other and in order to really get out of this crisis we need to address all the parts, in the short term and for the long term.  He is looking at the Big picture and all the little pictures that contribute to the entire situation.  Also, I think that he recognizes that by addressing these things together we have a stronger approach that has a much better chance to succeed and we will have a good head start on other things that may need further attention later.  The braided cable is much stronger than the tensile strength of each separate wire added together, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, together we stand, divided we fall...  etc. .
