Okay, I didn't see this special since I don't have cable, but since the most stand-out names on the list were Warrant, Winger and Stryper, I'd venture a guess that the reason they're talking negatively about metal is because... well... what do these bands really know about metal? I mean, they're not even metal bands, they're pop bands. They always were pop, except L.A. Guns who had some edgy stuff when they first started. But people look back and call them "hair metal" because that's a convenient tag, it has nothing to do with the European metal tradition.

When I think of 80s metal I think Slayer, Venom, Bathory, Savatage, Possessed, Metal Church, Testament... Which is ironic because the program seemed heavily anti-European in sentiment, and there have been no larger influences on metal than European underground music. For Americans who think Europe has nothing to offer musically, I have one word: Vienna.

Yeah, VH1 would know nothing about this, but you and I know all about Vienna. And Paris. And the Theater an der Wien, Salzburg, Zelazowa Wola and all those other places throughout Europe which have become part of music history.

PS -- Barry Manilow is heavier than anything Metallica has done since 1988. lol

Someone who knows what I'm talking about! I rest my case.
~mumbles~ darn VH1, like they know anything about Metal anyway.
Now if we can just find someone who actually saw it. Ah, they
probably had better things to DO!
