Okay, so, Ryan made a mistake and got knocked up in high school. He was a junior, so, y'know, oh shit. But, his boyfriend was a police cadet, and he could support the baby, and he figured it would be okay. Other guy would help, and he could still go to college, part time, maybe, and perhaps a community college, but still college. That's better than nothing. And still, as much as he is pro-choice, it's two and a half months by the time he finds out, he's only got, like, two weeks to make a decision, and he just doesn't think he can terminate the pregnancy. He kinda likes his boyfriend, and that little bundle of cells is part of him and his boyfriend. That has to be worth something.
So, he keeps the baby.
Flash forward four years, and we have a Ryan who has a husband that is never home. He's gone at work, or something, a police officer, always busy, emotionally unavailable, but that's no surprise, considering that Ryan never thought that he really loved him. And the kid has always just been some sort of obligatory task, to him. And Ryan, well, Ryan loves his son with all his heart, loves how he looks like a mini-Ryan, and is adorably precocious, likes to make trouble whenever he can. Ryan can't understand how he could ever be obligatory.
Enter Brendon. He's a college senior, charming, and works with the preschool kids to help achieve his degree in teaching. Ryan is distracted by Brendon immediately, but he tries to keep his focus on his son, and keeping the house in working order. It's harder than it looks. His husband never really did help out enough to let him do more than finish high school. And college is expensive- how could they support a baby and pay for Ryan's college, all on a police officer's paycheck? And what could Ryan really do without a college diploma? Nothing worthwhile.
And Brendon, well, Brendon loves Ryan's son. Brendon loves all kids, but Ryan's kid is just adorable, friendly and oddly serious, sometimes. Then he meets Ryan when he comes to pick him up one day, and holy jesus, Brendon has never been captivated by a person like that before. He's gorgeous, skinny and oddly graceful, with a beautiful round face with wavy hair curling around it. Brendon needs to talk to him, get his story, find out if his voice is a waving and curly as the rest of him. (It isn't.)
So one day, Ryan's in a hurry picking his kid up- something to do with his husband, he got off early, or something, Ryan's hoping that maybe there can be some father-son bonding tonight, and he forgets his son's backpack in his haste. Brendon, finding the address in the backpack, decides to drop by Ryan's house on the way home- it's not that far out of his way, and anyways, it's not like he has anything to be late for, all he has at home is a fern and a frozen dinner, neither of which will expire in the fifteen minutes this trip will take.
Ryan answers the door frazzled-looking. Instead of spending time with his son, Ryan's husband snapped at the bother of teaching his kid how to ride on his trike/training-wheeled bike. The thing is about Ryan's husband, is that he isn't abusive. He isn't cruel, he just isn't there. He doesn't have the kind of love for his family that he should. He never really believed that the kid was his, but his mom made him do the honorable thing and take care of Ryan and the baby, even without proof (never mind the fact that Ryan hadn't cheated on his boyfriend at all- the baby could only be his). So, Brendon drops by, and Ryan is at his wit's end with his husband- he's seriously contemplating thinking about separating or something like that. Ryan is thankful for Brendon bringing the bag by- Ryan's noticed him at this point, but he's a little bit preoccupied by the rest of his life circling around him. Brendon is just a little bigger than a blip on his radar.
Little does he know that as Brendon starts to pop up more and more, he will become much more than a blip on his radar.
Worth any time? Y/n?
