i have always been about tradition and never about change. the idea that the university of illinois is retiring its mascot the "chief" bothers me because its getting rid of an important tradition.
i whole heartedly understand the necessity to acknowledge the fact that some may see his presence as racist or degrading but getting rid of him shouldnt be the answer. i dont truthfully see how he can be racist or degrading because i feel that he is truly honored and respected and his fans hold him to the uttmost of standards. i feel like he is on a pedestal at this university because of his position. if he were mocked and put down then i would understand the degrading aspect but that is not the case. if native americans feel like there is something wrong in the his portrayal then they should put forth some ideas as to how we can more accurately and appropraitely portray the heritage, not expect us to get rid of him all together. the chief has been and will always be a large part of illini culture. u cant expect us to forget that. and u cant expect us to get another mascot.
in the paper today- a retired professor said that the chancellor and president of the university are not leading the university but rather caving to political correctness. they are not invested in the university as they should be. maybe that is because they are new or because they are trying to find their niche but either way it should be about the university, the tradition, and the culture. we should be trying to find ways to fix problems not clearing the slate and hoping it will go away.

how can the board of trustees make a decision at 6am on a friday morning without even voting on it?? obviously they knew it was going to be a joke if they tried to vote on it. but 6am on a friday morning on this campus? and how can u make a "concensus" decision without even voting??

maybe it is because no one has really stated why they believe the chief is so sterotypical or why he is so humiliating to native americans. i would be proud to be native american at a university that holds their indian mascot in such high regard. i just dont get it. but then i have never enjoyed change. RIP Chief Illiniwek. we will miss you
