Happy Easter to all those who celebrate. If you're secure in your beliefs then keep reading; if not, then you may wish to look away now. :)
So the Easter story is basically the whole point of Christianity. And I've got a fundamental problem with it.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. - John 3:16
Which sounds sweet enough on the face of it.
But let's imagine that someone else - your friend Ed, say, or that guy you see at the bus stop - suddenly came up to you and went, "Look how much I love you - I killed someone for you!"
I understand that the cultural morality of the time demanded payment for wrongdoing. But anyone who insists on proving his love for me by having his child horrifically tortured to death? Is not someone I want to know. Human, god, or otherwise.
Q
Antisocial personality disorder: disdain it in our neighbours; esteem it in our deities. What a profoundly muddled-up species we are.
