Click to viewIt looks like I was right about when Gene died...in 3x07, Shaz said to Chris and Ray, "it's always 1953 in your heads, isn't it?" I guessed he was killed somewhere around the early fifties, at least after 1952, which is when High Noon came out. Look at the pictures:
The flags on the wall are to celebrate Queen Elizabeth's coronation...in 1953. And that's why that portrait of HRH that's been bugging me so bad is everywhere in CID, and on the tin box holding the young cop's picture...it's her coronation portrait. (Also, oh shit, you guys...the look on his face there...) ;_;
In the field where the young cop is buried. Gene knows where he is now.
On the ground with blood on his face. (Plus Alex's Dorothy-from-Oz ruby slippers.) If at any point he starts bleeding from the head - anywhere near where the young cop's wound is - I will absolutely fucking crumble.
To quote the man himself...you know, I hate being right sometimes. And to quote Sam? I see why he told the Guv "it's best for you that you don't know," and literally took himself out of the game rather than making his beloved Manc Lion face something so horrible. ;_;
