A plea to my fellow Mac users* - help!

Have spent a few days playing with the new laptop now, and have, unsurprisingly, encountered some Issues:

1. Security. I think I kind of assumed that Leopard came with Anti-Virus software pre-installed - silly me. I've been downloading stuff willy-nilly trying to get back all the apps I had with my old computer, but there's every possibility a virus might have snuck in due to Leopard's UTTER LACK OF ONLINE SECURITY.

Anyone have any recommends for good security software? Does the free stuff get the job done, or is MacAfee worth the cost?

2. Version conflicts. Is Snow Leopard worth the upgrade? I've already got an Install disk for it, so cost isn't an issue here. Compatibility is: I can't get Gimp to open in Leopard (even though they swear blind on the sourceforge forum that they fixed that problem with the last update but OH WELL), but I'm also told that Lightscribe won't work with Snow Leopard. Plus, if I have somehow gotten a virus online from Leopard's shoddy security, I'm scared to upgrade now for fear the nasty bug will mess something up.

3. Gimp. This is seriously getting beyond a joke now. Do Photoshop or the hella expensive Apple graphics editor work well enough to warrant them charging out the nose, or is there another free one that gets the job done?

4. CD player. I need a screen where you can make the display counter numbers really big, so I can see them from the floor when I'm doing my exercises (I use the music to time my stretches). I used to have KSCD and that worked a treat, but no way in hell am I installing a whole fucking KDE package just to get one fucking player app.

Anyway. Yeah. Help? Any light anyone could shed on any one of these issues would be grandly appreciated.
