They supposedly have quite a shiny word processing program, but their home page seems not to exist. There's another site, brothersoft, which claims to peddle their wares, but I am a bit mistrustful as I can't find anything on Google about them changing their name or their website and therefore can't ( Read more... )

I don't getcha, what part of www.abisource.com is not existing for you? I'm getting an extensive site about the AbiWord program, with download links and stuff.

Okay, that's weird...I swear to god neither Safari or Firefox would recognize that site a few minutes ago. Maybe they were down for maintenance er summat? :/

Anyway, cheers for alerting me.

I was getting a few weirdy MacAfee warnings about some of the download links on the site, so maybe something was trying to block you?

Yeah, I've still not quite got the hang of the security/anti-virus thingummies on this computer. TBH it feels a bit weird even needing them since Linux is usually so bug-proof. Gah, learning new systems is shiny, but it makes my brane hurt.

?
AbiWord seems to be on the level. If anything looks a little hinky it's Brothersoft, which looks like it might be a third-party distributor.

If you're really worried, crosscheck it with something like CNET or Sourceforge.

Yeah, their slightly Mandrish-looking text didn't impress me either...'before you download, clean your pc from errors'??

I've mucked about with AbiWord - it's fine. Actually, the only reason I didn't hang on to it was that it wouldn't let me print just the even pages!

I've really got my work cut out for me now...four different text editors to play around with and decide which one I like best, in addition to learning a whole new OS. *head spins* Good to know this one's got an 'okay' vote of confidence though.

*marks down a vote for AbiWord*

I use AbiWord for anything I'm going to be pasting into LJ because it does the straight-up-and-down quotation marks, which my other word processing programs won't - or they probably do but I don't know how.
