The Time Traveler's Wife - a thought

Wouldn't it have been cool if Henry had a dog?

I'm not done reading the book yet, but I'm deep into the home stretch; and it's not too likely any more characters are going to be introduced. But I really think Niffenegger missed a trick here: not only would the dog know him every time he showed up when he was traveling, and be a familiar face - not to mention protection - whenever he found himself, but could also function as a warning in the present, like those service dogs who alert when someone's about to have a seizure.

I know the main point of the book was the love story between Henry and Clare, and Niffenegger probably didn't want to detract from that (or maybe she's just not an animal lover; I don't know). But I still think a dog would have been very sweet.

Q
