Doctor Who - 404 - The Sontaran Stratagem

...i think that has to be just about the best comeback i've ever seen. and i don't mean the sontarans.

first of all, massive kudos to helen raynor, who finally redeems herself from the 'daleks in manhattan' fiasco of last year. not only did this episode beat the pants off that one, it actually never felt padded. at all. i was engrossed in the story ( Read more... )

it took me until the second time he spoke to realize the voice-over was mike the cool one from the young ones

Absolutely. Which just begs the question, wouldn't a Sontaran played by Vyvian be infinitely scarier? "Right, that's it, I am now going to commit acts of extreme violence and destruction with this unfeasably huge laser cannon and psychotic hamster!"
:D

a rik sontaran would be scarier, but infinitely more annoying. and a neil sontaran couldn't be bothered and would just go off and make the tea.

anyway, dammit, rusty and co are actually making me watch this series and like it! they're just gonna yank it all away at the end, and then i'm going to cry. and yet i still watch.

i can stop any time i want! really!

Everything has its time and everything dies.

true, dat. :) and it's not really the dying part i take issue with...it's the tainting of certain characters/storylines that used to be really spectacular.

believe it or not, i actually used to like rose tyler in s1, with nine, before the whole 'clingy codependent girlfriend' character shift happened in s2. and i really fear they're going to do something similar to donna, although not in the 'girlfriend' way - ie, somehow fundamentally change her character for the worse. :(

that's the goodbye speech he should have given her, but didn't.

It's the one he did give Martha to try to tempt her to stay, when she first walks into the TARDIS at the end of LotTL -- then trails off when he realises she's definitely leaving.

...see, this is why i need to find a copy of the s3 boxed set. in my memory, he did tell her 'thank you', but not 'you've saved my life in so many ways' and 'there's so many places i wanted to take you' and mostly how great she was. am i having a brain fart there, though? *milks memory* :/

I was so unbelievably pleased at how mature the Donna&Martha meet was, them not fighting over the Doctor, realizing he needs someone.

why is she only staying for one season??? why??? - ...what? Omg what?!? Quick, a memory-wipe! *wipe* "...and Donna and the Doctor travel for ever and ever into season 5." Whew, that's better.

i'm not sure russell t davies realizes how incredibly offensive some of his female stereotypes are. i mean, if he saw a story were all the gay men characters were swishy and queeny, i'm sure he'd be terribly offended...but for some reason all female characters being bitchy and clingy where men are concerned is just peachy keen in his world. thank goodness they let that joke die with school reunion, indeed.
